We are headed to Corpus and he wants to take his Cast net to catch whatever as he is wading out in the ocean.
?? Never have I fished the ocean and and not sure what to tell him.....I saw another thread on here about easy ways to use freshwater gear.....I like it but any other suggestions or dads out there that feel the same way as I do about my 14 year old son....??

Not nuts just needs guidance. Tell him it is not legal to keep game fish caught in the cast net. It is fine to catch bait. Freshwater gear will catch most fish inshore.

Freshwater gear will catch most fish inshore. ^THIS^ There's videos on how to cast net some mullet. Also, if you never been to the salt before, take a bottle of unseasoned meat tenderizer in case anyone gets stung by a jellyfish. When wading, don't take normal footsteps. Instead, slide your feet along the bottom. You don't want to step on a stingray.

Shuffle feet and don't wade too deep.

what ever he does, tell him to be mindful especially if he hooks up a fish (and to get out of the water with it ASAP after pulling it in...) there was a kid south of Houston that got his leg bit up by a shark this week... I don't mean to be paranoid, but the ocean has alot of mean stuff swimmin around (even in the shallows)

http://www.cnn.com/2013/06/17/us/texas-shark-attackthere is the link to the story... From what I understand, you need to be most cautious where rivers feed into the ocean (best fishing areas for predators [human and shark alike]) but I am no expert on any of this either, so take what I am saying with a grain of salt

I recommend getting some live bait in that case... its very rare to get skunked using live bait... be there early, and be patient. Live bait almost always produces (and god knows what he may catch, there is all sorts of stuff swimmin around out there)
