A few years ago I had the opportunity to fish with big bass legend Jed Dickerson. The brutal Iowa winter was getting to me, and on a Wednesday I booked a flight leaving Saturday for a four day fishing trip to San Diego. I had no plans, just to go somewhere warm and hopefully catch some bass. When I stopped in a tackle shop and saw Jeds card, I knew I had to go fishing him. He was in the record books with a 21.7 lb bass, at the time the 4th largest ever caught, and was there with his friend Mac when he landed a 25.1 lb bass. Though I didnt land my 10 lber that day, it was a fun day on the water and I learned a lot. Jeds one of the nicest guys Ive ever met, and Ill definitely fish with him the next time I find myself in southern California. I asked him to participate in Rod and Rivets Four Questions series, and he was kind enough to help out.

Whats the best fishing advice youve ever been given?

The best fishing advice ive been given is that there is no substitute for time on the water, and that everyday is different. If something is killing them one day try it again the next day, but if the fish arent cooperating dont be afraid to switch it up.

Whats the draw to bass fishing for you?

The thing that draws me to bass fishing is easy. When you finally catch a trophy bass youve accomplished something that can never be taken away from you. Take pictures and let her go and hopefully next time shell be bigger. A true sense of accomplishment after dedicating hours and hours on the water.

Whats your dream fishing destination?

My dream fishing destination is a tough question because as you know I love sight fishing in clear water, so any place with clear water and bass in the upper teens would be my dream. It used to be around here in southern California, but now the upper teen fish are pretty much gone for the time being. I still love throwing the old buzz bait around though, and you can do that pretty much anywhere in the United States.

Whats one piece of fishing equipment an angler should invest extra money in?

Im gonna say one piece of fishing equipment to spend some extra money on is the line you use. When fishing for trophy size bass you need the best line available because you might not ever get a second chance. I use p-line extra strong and maxima. P-line is a little stronger but has bad memory. Maxima is better if you have to do a lot of casting, but p-line is better for pulling the fish out of structure.
