Makes sense to Me? I prefer my live bait to be live. I hook each bait different. I also find using a Carolina Rig with an egg sinker helps get the live bait down. Gene did u say diet milk??

I hook them through the nose and use my 25 gallon, 800 GPH, Masterbaiter... Keeps bait alive for hours... The
Masterbaiter was perfected for me by Colonel Angus himself.

Hook em above the second molar on the left. Perfect!! And two diet milks to go! Seriously though, run it trhough the front of the eyes without puncturing the eyes. Bam!!!

I have experienced problems with hooking them through the nose. The hook will slip through and turn into the gill plate. If it doesn't kill them, the point is buried so that the hook will not set. I open the mouth and thread a fine wire hook up through the roof of the mouth. It needs to come out close to the front edge
of the nose. This will keep the bait lively and the hook point will be exposed. If it turns while they swim it will not reach the gill plate.

One way to prevent them from moving up the hook is to pinch off a small piece, 1/4" or so, of a grub or rubber worm and put that on the hook before you put on the shad.

Doesn't interfere with hook set, and keeps the scaled critter where he belongs.

Finally the correct answer! Anywhere between their second molars and first bicuspids and you should be fine.

On somewhat larger shad, I'll hook them through the collar just behind the gill plate to avoid this problem. Another solution is to downsize your hook on smaller baits.

Of course, the simplest way to avoid this is to use lively sunfish for bait & just hook them in front of the dorsal fin!
