So here we are, six months after a relocation, and this Great Laker has been working hard to become a full fledged son of the Republic! So far, I've learned that Texas BBQ is the only true BBQ, even Cowboys fans hate Tony Romo, and the Striper/Hybrid fishing in northeast Texas can be off the chains. I moved to this great state with no expectations, certainly not thinking that I would find myself on the water 2-3 times a week. I didnt even know what a Hybrid was when I moved here! I got the same skeptical raised eyebrow from all my buddies back in the midwest when I told them that there were plenty of opportunities to fish and duck hunt near Dallas. That is until they were butt deep in snow drifts and I was sending them pictures like this:



So June has started a little slower fishing-wise than I expected. We got about a weeks worth of topwater action in May, and then it has been almost non-existent on Ray Hubbard. We've caught our fair share of whites and hybbies in deep water, but still waiting for the big boys to surface. In the mean time, Tay and I have been spending plenty of time on the water, which I can not complain about. The last week and a half, we've finally seen the wind subside a bit which makes for pleasant days on the lake when its not storming. Tay and I celebrated our birthdays earlier this month (2nd and 5th) by spending the evening on the water followed by some sushi, silly hats, gongs, and fried ice cream. Our gift to each other was a new Yeti Tundra 75 thats also serving as a coffin box/seat in the boat.





Last night, I took Tay's youngest cousin out fishing for the evening. Hank is home from college for the summer, and training very hard right now (plays college basketball) for the upcoming season. He definitely enjoyed the opportunity to unwind a little and caught his first Hybrid! Unfortunately, this fish was hooked deep, so into the Yeti he went.


Fish were cruising in 16-30 FOW and his hit a chartreuse Godfather. I worked sassy shad and a flutter spoon all night to no avail on the hybrids.

Lastly, Im proud to say whats exceeded my expectations the most though is all the friends I have made through common pursuits in such a short time. To all the RHSA characters that took me in, I want to say THANK YOU!

Now, Im off to Michigan till Sunday for work. I may even find some time to do some Walleye fishing!

Carson that is a great post, and I am glad that you are part of the RHSA. I love Walleye fishing and eating hope you have a great trip. Summertime can be frustrating but once you figure the pattern out it can be awesome.The wind will lay down, early mornings are great in shorts and tee shirts and you are back in by 10.30 for lunch.

Great post Carson ...... I caught one of those sandies 2 years ago. I think it got nipped when it was young by a water turkey or crane and the finn came up missing and skin grew over. Looks funny __LOL__ Dang thing cheated me out of a full fillet

Great report Carson! As a Great Lakes transplant 35 years ago (Ohio) I can tell you for sure the fishing is so much better here. The duck and goose hunting far exceeds what they have going. But don't tell anyone up there. They won't believe you anyway.

I still go home every summer to fish Lake Erie for walleyes and perch. They have great white bass fishing but they are kinda beneath those serious walleye fisherman. I am taking a bunch of Moes slabs home this year to pass the time with whitee! They will fish all day for a 5 fish limit of walleyes. I need a little more entertainment than that. Thank goodness I'm just spoiled to Texas fishing!

Thank you everyone for the replies! I just wanted to make a follow up post and post a few pics from my jaunt back up north this week.

I fished two nights on Lake Charlevoix/Lake Michigan in my hometown, Charlevoix, MI. We specifically targeted Walleye as they've been hammering them lately. Fished last night with my Dad and a good friend, Kent Seymour. Kent is also a charter captain that runs out of Charlevoix- Whitecap Charters. If you're ever in need of a Salmon charter in Northwest Michigan, look him up, he is the best there is! It was a little slow last night (only picked up 3) so Kent and I decided to hit it again tonight. We limited out, our biggest walleye going 26.5" and a little over 6.5lbs. While Im proud to be a Texan, you can see why its always hard to leave home after trips like this:
