One hook, one jug. That's the rule in my boat. I usually fish them about three feet deep using a rubber band to hold the line in place.

Lol, never knew people would get offended over running a few jugs to put some fillets in the freezer. This was just going on while we were bank fishing on a slow day. Wasnt meant to offend anyone, more or less make some people laugh with me hitting my head and hauling in a 100 lb log.
Yea HankS I agree on the hooks, but have just noticed if I feed them back in the water I always end up with horrible tangles. Always keep a knife by my side just incase.

. they would spit on you if they though you jug for cats. why is that? What else would you jug for? X2??? sorry, i wans't clear in what I was trying to say. Some fisherman think jugging isn't really fishing but more like harvesting. I can somewhat see their point when I get on the lake and a boat with 5 guys are dropping 25 jugs across the lake. I have seen some boats drop 10 jugs per person which is illegal. yet, i see pontoons drifting across the lake with 20 rods spooled with 50lbs test, pulling in cats one after another. but that is "ok" since they were using a fishing rod. I personally would drop several jugs while i go chasing for whites or hybrids mainly because I don't have the patience to drift across the lake on 2 rods and get a bite every 20 minutes or so.

I've seen some disrespect for jug fishing as well. Mainly by a small number of guys that work hard to catch trophy cats, and always release them. Pretty sensitive to seeing big fish caught (much less harvested) by anything less than a Garcia 6000 on a 7.5' Pro Angler rod with a Gama circle hook rigged on a 3-way. Don't think anyone cares how you catch eaters! I'd worry very little about that. I would caution you on having all those dang hooks in the yak around my legs when there's a fish on in the water! I jug fish with my kids once in a while and make them feed the line back in the water as they pull it up. just a suggestion, of course... from my experience, some folks think jugging is lowly whether your catching eaters or trophy cats. you're right, its dangerous when you got hooks everywhere and a 30lb cat fighting you. normally i would try to unhook the fish before trying to get him in the kayak. if its anything above 20", i would just release the fish.

I used to jug line out of my center console. A tip that will help you out is tie your staging that has the hook on it to a trot line clip. When you get that fish up to the surface you just unclip him off the main line and then only have a little bit of string to deal with. Makes storing the hooks easier and safer. I only rod and reel fish now. I always caught big blues on my jugs and I release everything over 10lbs. Wasn't worth the effort to drive around just to let fish go.
Be careful and have fun.

Many fisherman (myself included) are a bit strange in our thinking when it comes to how we get fish. Some may think jugging, trolling, even bowfishing are not really sport but then we think nothing of laying a piece of plastic in a bass bed to make them mad enough to pick it up or slaying whites/hybrids when they concentrate in the creeks during the spawn and are most vulnerable or we chum for tuna, other ocean fish. Somehow many of us think the latter is more sporting....yes, we have our issues.

wow, people have a problem with Bowfishing?
IMO, that is more sporting than any fishing i have done. To have to get the fish shallow enough to see in murky Texas water, then get close enough to shoot them, while accounting for light refractrion; that seems very sporting to me

One could argue that anything short of grabbing fish by hand is not sporting. Of course, the handless man would beg to differ.

I think the term "sporting" is subjective. Jugging is legal. If you don't like it, don't do it. For the record, I don't harvest large fish of any species, but they sure are fun to catch.

I'll harvest the heck out of large Crappie and Sandies
large catfish don't taste good, so they get released. I don't harvest green fish but they are a lot of fun to catch

I will say I don't like it and I don't do it, personal choice. ....but I will certainly defend your right to do anything legal and if I don't like it, that's my problem!
