I live in Mckinney and looking to get out on the Red River sometime soon. I was thinking about friday, saturday and then the morning time on sunday. I would be primarily targeting catfish if that helps at all. Any suggestions on camping spots (I only have a texas fishing license so nothing on the OK side please), put in locations, pick up locations....etc. Any help is appreciated.

If you're heading down from Denison dam, there are not places to camp for a while. You can't camp on either bank, it is all private property. You have to find an island in the middle of the river. There are some small ones though.
The river was real down last time we camped on it, but with Texoma being almost full now they should be generating again. Someone else would need to confirm that though.
I've caught cats just past the stumps right near Denison Dam from the bank.
You can put in on the Oklahoma side below the dam, there's a nice beach area.
I hate to burst your bubble, but any fishing in the Red River is Oklahoma water and you have to have an Oklahoma fishing license. You can fish the Texas bank with a Texas license, but once you step foot in the water you are in Oklahoma. I had a Game Warden give me a warning for fishing in shin-deep water off the Texas side. He said step back to the bank or I can give you a ticket for fishing without a license.
And I hate to kick you while you're down, but OK fishing license is $55. I now have a Texas, Oklahoma, and Texoma fishing license. I've spent $100 in freakin' licenses just to fish that lake and river. Such a pain.

Not bursting my bubble. It's all good info since I'm just starting to plan for a trip. My Dad lives in Texarkana and we have seen the guys take a jon boat up the river a few miles and come back in an hour or two with a nice catch! I just want to get in some good fishin and get away from everything. I might try to find another river here in texas with some nice scenery and and no people.

Oh, yeah, don't get me wrong, I LOVED our trip and had an absolute blast. It was very remote and beautiful. Just wanted to let you know you can't just camp anywhere. We had to drag a few times but it was a very fun and cool paddle. You can check out the video from our trip if you want: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXVD8pda2Rw

As a side note, I absolutely love river camping trips and want to plan another one soon. Been thinking about the Trinity or Brazos, probably the Trinity since it's closer.

My understanding regarding licenses is that to fish the Red, you must have an OK license, period. The only exception is that portion upstream from Texoma that is considered part of the lake (check with the local OK game warden for the coordinates of the official lake boundary, used to be the I-35 bridge, but it changed), and the portion downstream from Denison Dam until Shawnee Creek (first creek below the dam, it's maybe 1/2 mile). In those parts, a TX license let's you fish the TX side.
No fish is too good for the grease.

You can paddle down to Wild Kingdom (7 miles) and camp there (I think it's $10 a night) and then paddle down to Carpenters Bluff and take out the next day. I don't know the levels or if they are generating but I assume they are due to the temps so I wouldn't plan on finding a safe sand bar to camp on. Hank you can take your Hobie down The Red with no problems.

Let me know if you want to hit it up sometime. Many parts of it are ~500 feet wide so even my PA12 can work. Those are the parts i would be most interested in.
Eventually, i want to buy a Ride 115 or something similar that can get into much more shallow areas

It's been 2 years since I've been to Denison Dam, but when I used to go regularly, I've had a couple different game wardens tell me different things about the licenses. One was the same as you've mentioned above. Another told me I could walk in the water all the way to the other side, but if I got out on the bank I was in Oklahoma. I hope they are at least consistent with that. Better to be safe than sorry though.

They are consistent. The Oklahoma GW sits up the hill by the water towers with binoculars and if he sees you step in the water from the Texas side hes on you. Dale Moses the Texas GW is not so bad.

What are you basing that statement off of? Have you been recently? Like you said, they could be generating a lot more recently, but we were there maybe 2 months ago and you would NOT have wanted a ProAngler there. I had to drag my Pescador over a dozen times in a 3 mile stretch, and the rest of the time it was between 6-18 inches deep with a few exceptions. Again they could be generating a lot more now since the lake is up, but I'd do some research before dragging the PA down there!
