There's a lot of water in the area. Animas, Piedra, Dolores, San Juan, Los Pinos. Talk to the guys at Duranglers to see what's fishing well, and have at it!

How far around? The San Juan is usually a great day of fishing. Lots of places right there in DUrango. I have fished the upper Animas river, Vallecito lake is right there too. It has lots of fly fishing opportunities lakes and rivers. My favorite is the Piedra river(s) (forks). Fish them on the way to William's Creek lake, if you don't mind hiking a few miles the upper Los Pinos is awesome fishing.

Also recommend the Piedra. There are some cheap cabin's called something like Sportman's paradise, and there is s trail along the Piedra that is an easy mile or so walk upstream to where Williams Creek joins. The water gets a little bigger. I'd recommend fishing Stimulators, dropper optional.

Another vote for the piedra here. I hit the twelve mile walk or horse back only section last year. Went in about five miles from the down stream parking lot before I started fishing. One you get a mile in I would expect completely solitude. Fished up a few mile never saw another person till packing back out a mile from the parking lot. Every likely spot held a fish was an amazing day and great seinery saw a bear as well.

Last month's RRFF'ers meeting was this very topic. There are more options around Durango than I realized. The presenter was Nick Ross, a guide with "The San Juan Angler" in Durango. Nick was very enthusiastic about the fishing opportunities in the area. I haven't fished with him, but he sure seem to know what he was talking about and he definately loves to fish. If I were headed up there I'd give their shop a call to talk them about the options. This guy made a good impression on me. Supposedly, you can take the vintage train, and get off to fish the Los Pinos. We were guided in some private meadow, but the train went by just above us.

You can drive to the train station by taking the road almost directly acros the stree from conejo river anglers. That stretch of the pine is great water lots of browns cut bows and a few really nice rainbows. A short walk and you can get some solitude for sure. You need to move a lot and find the productive holes but an active angler can have a banner day down there.

Osier area is a nice place to fish and you can take the train from antonito or chama...

The Animas in town is truly gold medal fishing. Also consider getting a Ute Indian reservation fishing license and fishing their stretches of all the above mentioned rivers. You will be fishing by yourself most likely, catch a lot of fish, and feel like you've stepped back in time. Lonesome dove style. The Ute tribe take great pride in keeping their waters clean and managed well.
