Hey guys. I've got a basic 7 ft rod that is a Shakespeare and I'm thinking about using it to try my hand at surf fishing this weekend. Is this a long enough rod? Any other tips? I'll be fishing around San Luis Pass on Galveston Island.

What type of reel? If your casting from shore you won't b able to get it out as far as a longer rod but its fine. I use a 6'6 penn some times but I normally use a 7ft to 7'6 to wade and fish the first cut.

It's a spinning reel. So it should work fine if I wade out some and cast it?

What size is it and what size line?h. I use 7's all the time although i have some 12 13 and a 15. If your targeting reds and specs a 7ft is good enough.

The 7 ft will be fine. Wade the surf with it and keep moving. There will be other fishermen in the surf.

Not sure of the size of the reel off of the top of my head. I spooled it with 14 lb mono. Planning on using a saltwater leader I bought with a lazer hook.

What kind of set up should I use in terms of bait and hook? Technique suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I would like to catch reds & specs.

We can't help you until you answer some questions. Which side of the pass? Was the tide moving? What color was the water? Were the boaters catching fish?

I haven't been out there yet. I'm looking for tips on what kind of setups to use and what areas to try. I'll be fishing the east side of the pass probably.

Start in the surf near the water tower and work your way toward the pass. Go home if the water is sandy.

I've caught limits of trout in sandy surf. If you see bait and birds, there will be predators following. Fish don't stop eating because the water isn't clear, they are just a little bit harder to catch. The best way to learn is to give it a shot whenever you can no matter what the conditions are and see what works and what doesn't.

In terms of bait and hook, go with a popping cork with 20 lb mono or fluoro to a treble or kahale hook with live shrimp. You can't go wrong with that set up. As you learn the surf and how to pattern fish, start throwing some artificials at them. Spoons and top waters are great surf baits.

Awesome, thanks for the tip. How far out should I be fishing? Also how should the tides be?
