I tied a few more yesterday and this morning...

I used buck tail for a few of them...anyone care to tell me the pros/cons of using buck tail for crappie jigs? The maribou doesn't stand up to catching that many fish...the flashabou and krystal flash stays on the jigs but the maribou is eaten off...I was thinking the buck tail may be a little more durable and it seems to be easier to work with...

thanks Bobby...me and you gotta go pretty soon man...I got trolling motor issues right now...either will have it fixed or a new trolling motor in a few days...what they have been biting up there on is the top two third from the left...they love that yellow and red combination...

Those look great. Someday I'll go with you. It has to be on the weekend for me though. Can't get off work except Friday afternoons and I go see my Mom then. She is in a nursing home in Graham.

Great lookin ties Jack!! Have you tried tying with hackle feather's? Maribou is pretty delicate. I haven't done anything with bucktail but I know rabbit makes for a fine crappie jig. Moves nice in the water.

It is my understanding that buck tail is a better winter bait because it has less action, better immitating cold bait fish. Buck tail is more durable than deer belly. All the deer belly I've tied broke off after a few casts. Pepop is correct, get some hackle or schlappen. I don't use the mariboo part of the feather, it goes in the trash.

@ pepop...no sir, have not tried hackle feathers yet nor have I tried rabbit, but I can see where the rabbit would have a lot of action...

note to self: get hackle feathers and maybe some rabbit...

@AggieKenny..I can see where the bucktail would be for cold weather because it is so stiff....haven't thought about that...I will have to find out what schlappen is....

Schlappen is similar to hackle, but has more usable barbs for better "V's", or the hair like wisps in a feather jig.

You might also try some craft fur! Lots of color possibilities...

Check them out HERE

Fly tier (yeah, I can fly fish...but the fish don't like frothy water!)
