How do most of y'all fill your fly reel? It would mainly be for redfish. I'm not sure if I should go with 100 or 150 yards of 20# backing, and after the backing what else do y'all usually put and how much of it? I am probably going to be using the 8wt floating line, I'm not familiar with the leaders though.

Doubt you would get spooled on an 8 with 100 yards. I lean toward fluorocarbon leaders - tie your own with a few different weight spools of Seaguar InvisX.

Okay thank you, and how much line would you usually put after the backing?

Depends on the size of the reel spool. Most eight weight saltwater fly lines are 105 feet long. I'd put enough backing behind it to fill the spool to within 1/4 inch of the outer rim.

The most direct approach is to put the line on backward...first the fly line and then the backing. Then you reverse it. It's pretty hard to guess when you put the backing on first...knowing when it is just enough. A large area and another person helps a lot.

Okay thank you, that makes a lot of sense actually.

well, my 9wt I went overkill on, I have 50yds of dacron 30 under 350 of gelspun, under 100 of dacron but I occasionally see things like tarpon and use it in the surf with really big jack cravelle
