If it doesn't work. It's called JUNK !!! Not really !! It's the starter and sometimes can be rebuilt. A new one is not cheap !!!

The part that is on top of the starter is called a Bendix. It is not expensive. I had to change it out on my boat. It was simple.

There is a spring that pushes the bendix up to the flywheel to start the motor. The one I changed was brass..which is made to fail. They make them like that so if it goes bad it wont mess up your whole motor.

It's important enough that I'm.not gonna take it off just to take a pic of it to ask what it is.... I don't like jacking with things what ain't broke yet, with my luck I would break something that was.fine before me messing with it..

Its a rope pull start eliminator or a muffler bearing.
