My 8 yr old daughter wears hers 100% of the time, and after she fell out of the boat last weekend, there won't be any arguments from her.

I dont disagree with wearing one. I wear one all the time when I am out in my kayak and wear a CO2 waist strap one at all times in the boat. It has nothing to do with the cool factor. I also know there are certain instances when the things you are doing dont warrent one. Wading in belly deep water is not one to me. It is all about the situation, there is no situation where not wearing a seat belt is warented so that is like comparing apples and oranges.
More drowning occur in a pool with concrete or gunite on all sides for kids to hit their heads on but I'm sure no one thinks that 7-10 year olds that can swim need a life jacket on in there.
Just seems like to me that each parent knows their kids and most make intelligent decisions regarding the situations. My blood is not going to boil nor an I going to judge them for that.

I have to agree with all on here except for one post. Life Jackets should be on at all times while in boats, but for kids that are 7-10 years old wading in belly deep water, that is a call for the parent. At 10 years old I could swim better than most grown men and there was no need. By the time I was 12 I would go 50 to 80 yeards off the coast snorkling without a jacket. I dont think that judgements should be made on parents letting kids this age go out with life jackets because there is a wide variety of skill sets swimming by this age. I also started taking swimming lessons at 1.5 years old. I guess the exception not the rule. The whole purpose to a life preserver is what again? Sadly, folks think that the only people that should wear them are those that cannot swim at all or swim very well. Why risk your life? Why not take the simple precautionary measure to prevent such tragedies? Oh yeah....because it isn't cool and it is uncomfortable. I am guilty of not wearing it at all times just like the rest of you....but when Mother Nature is having her way and I am out in it, I will do whatever is in my best interest to make sure that I make it back home safe to see my family. All I am saying is: 20-25mph SW winds, lake is white capping with almost a foot of chop and you would be okay with your child wading out into belly deep water on a South facing point with no life preserver? Not this guy....regardless of how well my children think they can swim. That's like telling your 16 year old that they don't have to wear a seatbelt because they think they are good drivers. Not only is it the law....but more importantly its their life. Wow!! I really do envy your swimming ability. But you are obviously an exception these days parents are to ignorant that the enforcement on these laws needs to be increased

thanks, I really worked hard at it. Was really just trying to point out that a lot of 7-10 yo can swim and there are plenty that can not. Each situation warrents different approaches. But I am not going to get "pretty angry" at I assume the parents for that type of situation. On a boat or an area where a kid can fall in is a different scenario and a life jacket should be worn at all times.

I can remember a time when you could get a ticket if the kids didn't have their PFD on when parked at shore. We had a group at Tallman's on Tawakoni back in the 70'. Park on shore and the kid was fishing out of the back of the boat(Tallman didn't allow fishing from the shore). And, they were written a ticket because he didn't have one on while doing this. Mine always had one on. Call me over cautious. We still today, if you get in my boat and the big engine is running. You have a PFD on. No matter what age.

BN -as she should because it is the law and you are on a boat. As she does. But she has complained about it for a variety of reasons, none of which are vaild, but she didn't complain after going in the drink. (thanks to a ski boat wake)

15. Signature images may not be larger than 600 pixels wide by 125 pixels tall. This includes logos, photos and other graphics. Also, no more than one row of images are allowed. If you want four or five logos in your signature, reduce their size to fit in one row. psalms 91:1-16

If you ever had the misfortune to have to pull the lifeless body of a child out of a body of water, you'll then truly appreciate and understand the importance of a Personal Flotation Device. Not only in boats on lakes , but small ponds, swimming pools and even boat docks/marinas are just as deadly.
I have actually been cussed on the water for suggesting to a parent to get a PFD on their child. Yes it's their kid, but kids depend on their parents to make the right decisions for them until they have enough experience in life to make them on their own.
I do not have children, but kids without PFDs makes my blood boil.

Its pretty sad people put the value of a life jacket on their kids. Who cares about the law, care about the lives of others, especially children. I couldn't imagine losing a child because I was to sorry to put a life jacket on them.

Its a pre requisite before my little girl can step foot in boat, on a pier, and even fish a bankline of a pond. I grew up on lakes and have seen my fair share of drowning victims. Unfortunaltey most are kids and their parents didnt even realize they were drowning until it was too late.

I spent twenty years in the U.S. Coast Guard doing search and rescue. Parents, kids, everyone--wear your life jacket. Too many dead bodies, large and small.
