Two per person on a boat is max. On shore line you can spread out more for more lines out. I always use 2-3 at one time.

If bank fishing by yourself then 3 rods no more than 8 ft apart. I used to space them out at least fifteen ft and use 6 rods at the same time but I'd end up having to run back and forth between rods that are on complete opposite ends from each other at times. So with three you can space them out and sit with the middle rod waiting for the other two rods to go off. It's just more hassle using too many rods.

Rule 1 - Fish where the fish are! I do. You ever had 4 or 5 poles go down at once? Then it's time to decide which one is the biggest.

I run 6 rods when Im alone on the bank and only acouple more if another is with me.They are spaced at least 10' apart and cast out at least 20' from each other. Also stagger 2-3 at half the distance back to shore to cover for the tighter cruisers. I move them as the bite progress's,more often then not 40-70(feet)from the bank is the pay zone. Your average 18 wheeler is right near 70' long to help you figure distance.
