Hey guys, I just moved to Keller and want to give Crappie fishing a shot. Im more of an offshore guy so this is the whole other side of the spectrum for me. I plan on taking out my kayak and just slowly trolling some jigs and tubes around structure. Shallow or deep this time of year and are the creeks off Grapevine holding any fish? Thanks

Nice to see someone on here who is also from Keller! The best place to crappie fish around here is lake Grapevine either by slow trolling minnows around water drop off and deep structure, but i find my best success shooting and jigging the marinas around the lake! when I shoot docks I use the bobby garland baby shad with a roadrunner jig head. Also a lot of the ponds across Keller have some crappie in em. Best of Luck and tell me how you did!

Yeah I am excited about taking the new yak out. Never fished for Crappie but I like tasty fish. Also might look for some sandies as well. What ponds in keller have Crappie?

Trolling is not good around structure for crappie, as you cannot use weedless jigs most of the time due to crappie biting light sometimes. If you go to a lake without a lot of timber like Texoma, you can locate the crappie on your fish finder and troll through them at the correct depth with chartreuse crank baits and do very well. Downside is you'll end up with lots of stripers, Smallmouth, Largemouth and other big nasties. For example: There are five crappie on this stringer but you can hardly see them for the bass stripers and drum
John 21:3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee.

Good luck on Grapevine Taylor. About this time last year I was catching them pretty good in the submerged timber at the mouths of both creeks on the west end of the lake. I just can't seem to make myself get back over there and fish the deeper water in the summer.
PK, you probably already said how you get the crankbaits down deep enough on another post. Maybe you are using a weight above it?
And as far as eating freshwater drum goes...I'll mention it again. If you compare the diet of a drum to the diet of a catfish, anyone who will eat a catfish shouldn't turn their nose up at a drum.
