So I just bought a house in buyou vista right before galveston. I went there this weekend and was palanning on doing some fishing on my kayak. I was only out there for about 2 hours and only caught 2 small specs. I was using a popping cork with a new penny gulp alive shrimp. I was talking to a gentlemen and he said all the fish during the summer move out of the grass and flats and go to much deeper water because the water is so hot during the summer and because i didnt catch much is becasue all the fish are starting to move to deeper water. But then I heard a guy say during the summer all the trout and reds move into the grass and flats and school up. If any of yall have a house or know any info about this please let me know what happens to the fish. Is it just a waste of time during the summer? I am usually a bass guy so know very little to none on salwater.

Thanks for any input yall!

Lol their both kind of right to a point. If the water isn't as deep it gets hotter and they do move out, following the tides basically. Try fishing early in the morning and later in the evening.

It's best to follow tides, but the way 'I' see it:

Summer:
Dusk till Dawn - Shallows
Noon and afternoon - Deep

You can scoot down to causeway and have luck on any outbound tide

Look for channels, look for deeper holes, structure!
Learn the places that the tide moves water through channels and edges and in and out of the flats and target those areas. Ideally when the tides coincide with sunrise and sunset and you have found those areas I mentioned above, you will find the fish!

....we'll be down at Louis Bait Camp this evening around 7pm or so. Ask for any of the FWB guys and we'll be happy to give you some advice.
If you are yakking down there take the first cut to the west after you go under the railroad bridge into Basfords Bayou. I was back there this past weekend in a Shoalwater and the flats were looking good. There are plenty of Reds in there and whoever told you they are headed to the deep water is mistaken. Flounder back in there as well. Forgot to mention that I saw plenty of shrimp and glass minnows up against the grass. I was using plastics, but you can bait your canal in Bayou Vista and catch your own before you paddle back there.

...so good it tastes like it died screaming!

Thanks a lot. I will acually be down there the week of the 10th and if you'll be down there I sure would be happy to talk about all the fishing and how it works down there. But thanks a lot @galveston340!
Appreciate it!

Fished in that area alot. We do most of our fishing in that area around BV at night under the residential dock lights. No shortage of trout (and mosquitos!). Not many keepers except during winter or cooler months when there seem to be bigger fish in the shallow and the lack of bait makes them more aggressive. Common to catch good flounders and sheephead with live shrimp around the pilings and bulkheads. One of the biggest flounder I have ever caught was at night under a light near there. Stick to the canals sections adjacent to the main bay and you should do good with a kayak.
