I am fixing to get some new fly line and was wondering if I will notice anything has changed? I am leave the cabelas line that comes on there combos and I will be getting Rio Gold (seem to be the preferred line for upgrades). Will I notice that it shoots any better, floats better/longer? Any help will be good.

Thanks
Drew

.
Good question.
What's wrong with the fly line that came on the Cabelas combo?
How much did the combo outfit cost?
How much does the Rio Gold line cost?
Just curious..

The line is 2 years old and is starting to sink fairly quick. Also the spool was left in a back pack that was been sitting in the garage for the last 2 months.

The line is just the basic starter line which is called prestige plus which will run your 30 dollars or so

The rio gold line is around 74 dollars and a vast amount of people I have talk to about it say that it is the best line out there. But I don't want to spend that kind of money if I will not be able to notice any difference on the rio over a cheaper line.

Thanks

Oh forgot that I still consider myself a huge notice so I am not sure if that will make a difference. I understand that some of the better caster may be able to fell a difference between lines

My first 4wt had Cabelas prestige line on it. When it got to the point of where it was cracking and sinking I upgraded to Wulff TT line. It felt smoother casting the new line. I also put Rio Gold on my other 4wt and it's pleasure to cast as well.

biggerD, before you jump the gun and buy a fly line that is as expensive as most starter sets, let me share some of my experience with you.
I believe there is more hype in fly lines than any other segment of the fly fishing community

Until you know a special need for a high dollar fly line, I would stick with the mid-range, less expensive lives.

Let me make a suggestion for reconditioning your Prestige line, which is a good quality all purpose, line IMO.
Wash your line with a mild detergent and then apply 303 Aerospace Protectant, which bring a fly line back to life unless cracked or mistreated.
This is the best stuff around for conditioning and available at most auto supply stores try it and let me know what you think?
Good luck,
George

Drew, please add your location to your profile.

There are occasional fly fanatic 'meet and greets' that could provide you with a friendly opportunity to put a different line on your rod and test it.

Some folks are just that generous.

The ONLY reason to fish with a fly rod in Texas
is to throw a POPPER, casting any other type fly just means you're doing something.

I haven't used a Gold line, so I can't comment on it. But pretty much with any new fly line you can expect it to be "slippery'er", which means it will shoot better/farther than the old line and it'll float better. But as George mentioned a good cleaning and redressing will extend the life of many fly lines. Since cleaning is cheap, it is a good place to start.

But unfortunately for those of us that don't like to spend money, there does come a time when lines have to be replaced. However, I do like new fly lines, they are fun to cast. laugh

I noticed a HUGE difference in line performance when upgrading from Cabelas line to Rio Gold. You won't be disappointed. Even on a low-mid end rod you'll be very happy about not skimping on your fly line. It will make your whole cast seem easier.

The Cabela's line ain't bad but it ain't a premium line either. The difference is noticeable to me. BPS has the Sage Performance Taper Freshwater on sale for 40 bucks. I picked one up for 30 bucks from Cabela's and it's a great line. Only slightly heavier head but pretty accurate weight body. These were $75 lines originally and I think made by RIO.

OK - I get it - a trout line for a WF4F with a 46ft head...

"RIO GOLD
The ultimate, all-round floating line for trout.

The RIO Gold has a revolutionary taper design that gives incredible loop stability at distance, a unique profile that allows a rod to load at close range and a front taper that delivers perfect presentation of flies between sizes #22 and #2. The RIO Gold is the ultimate all round, floating line for the trout fly fisher. The RIO Gold Tournament version of this line is designed for long distance casting events, and features an extra-long head for maximum distance."

I guess I would spend $75 bucks for a fly line for a special destination fly fishing trip?

Yeah, I suppose it probably makes more sense as a trout line. That's what I was thinking in my head while writing that post.

I'm all about saving money, too. Picked mine up when they changed the formula this year. Last year's was marked down to $50.

In my opinion, with lines as with much else in life, you get what you pay for. Cheaper lines break down more rapidly than the premium lines and lose their flotation and slipperiness faster. I have several reels with Rio Gold lines in different weights and find them very easy to cast.

the outer coating on the premium lines make them slick so you get good casts and can go longer periods without cleaning; cheaper lines have to be cleaned regularly for good casting; they get dirty quicker. Since I am cheep, I use cheep lines and sometimes I have to clean my line while fishing. I agree, you get what you pay for-p-

P - have you tried 303 Aerospace Protectant?
It is not a line cleaaner but a conditioner - it's slicker than snot and makes an old line new - best stuff I have ever found.
