I am wondering, what's the best method for catching Spanish with low end gear off of a pier? I do not get to saltwater fish much so I am not heavily invested.

Spoons with a wire leader or live bait with a wire leader.

Wire leader is a must...pitch any fast-moving shiny bait like a silver spoon. When their schooling I have even had them hit a shrimp. This is one of my favorite catches, they hit quick and take off.

Silver or white floating Rapalas or similar stick baits. I put a wire leader on them and they last for 5 or 6 fish so bring an extra!

Spoons work well. Definitely need leader material.

We did really well back in the fall off of H. Caldwell Pier throwing Fle-Fly minnow slabs. Our kids outfished the guys throwing gotcha plugs. Lots of fun on freshwater bass size gear! I would cast out as far as I could and burn the bait up to the surface. As soon as it hit the top I'd put the reel in free spool and let the bait drop back down to the bottom. Be ready to engage your reel when they strike on the fall. Those smacks hit fast and will take some line in a hurry on lighter gear.
