Disclaimer: My post is not even close to the epicness of Yak n Aggie's Gulf trip but wanted to share my weekend results.

Bob Sandlin didn't produce this weekend so I won't even bother reporting. It was fun to camp but fish were just not cooperating.

With all the recent rains we've had, the ponds I normally hit have naturally become very murky with almost zero visibility. I'd been throwing black, chart, green pumpkin, watermelon red without much success. While wandering around Wal Mart a few days ago, I came across these Strike King Shim e Sticks in sweet tater pie color. Perhaps the bass would be able to see these brighter colors a little better and for $3 a bag, heck why not right.

Yesterday I fished from about 2-4pm. I started to get bit early on and pretty consistently on every few casts.

They were hungry yesterday.

This little guy hit like a bass. Apparently it's a species called War Mouth. Pretty aggressive little bugger.

Few other nice ones. All caught on the sweet tater pie Shim e Stick.

Guess the lesson I learned is this: Don't be afraid to try new colors. I have a habit of always fishing with the same worms/colors/lures. Confidence thing I guess. This time around I tried something new and unconventional and it paid off.

Nice fishing!

Those neighborhood ponds hold some monsters. You ever fish that pond out in Prosper? Somewhat close to you out in Frisco and they allow Kayaks. I've never kayak fished it, but I've fished off the docks they have out there and caught a few crappie.

Way to change it up. Sometimes it's more exciting catching a dink on a new method.

Great job adapting to what works! I'm with you in that I also have to work hard sometimes to try new things...

Good report!

Nissley's recommendation for a natural high: kayak fishing

Man I saw your truck parked at the trout pond parking in the state park on Sunday morning. We were heading out on Bob Sandlin after having a god day on Saturday. We caught several on Sunday as well when it was pouring down rain. I wish we could have hooked up. We camped from Friday until yesterday morning. Maybe next time.

Nice fish bro! I've never heard of a War Mouth. Always fun catching something new.

In times of danger, not before
With the danger safely righted

Good job gator. And good to go outside your comfort zone. Trivia fact - the warmouth is one of the few if not the only perch species which does not spawn in colonies like say bluegill do. They have a lot of bass tendencies and features about them including that bass mouth and aggressive nature. Thanks for sharing.
