In my Manta Ray 12, 3.5mph is normal cruising speed. Really humpin it is 4.6. Have once hit 5 with a strong tailwind

I've never even thought about it, I just go. If it's into the wind its slower.

I go real slow in the Yellow Hippo because I keep my outriggers down. Everybody I go with beats me back to the bank but hey I always beat them in fishing. Low and slow for me.

Well there was this time I was at lake Fork fishing in the dark. I saw a gator in front of me about 20yrds. About that time a beaver slaped his tail right behind my kayak. You couldn't have caught up to me with a 300 merc that time!

That answer depends on conditions. I paddle a steady pace I can live with all day.

On my little 11' Ocean Kayak Caper with no wind I'll cruise at 2.5 pretty easily, it maxes out about 3.5 at least w/o a ton of effort so I suppose that is about it's hull speed. I have a fishin buddy fish finder that kills the speed big time but it's easy to pull up into the boat.
I have an oddball stackable 20' pirogue that I designed and built. Without wind by myself I can cruise at almost 4-5mph for an hour plus w/o much effort. It tops out at about 6.5mph with a lot of effort. However 3 people can ride in it and take turns paddling 2-3 mph solo which gives it practically unlimited range. It's not so good for the typical start/stop trips where I'm fishing a bridge or a stump field or pond, etc, though.

I think you will find 3-5 MPH to be a adverage speed. I had a Adventure Island and went 7MPH for about 100yrds per GPS once just to see how fast I could go. 5-6 is not a casual pace for me for long term paddle. I'm more in the range of 2-4 when just out on a leisure paddle.

I didn't know it was a race... lol I probably average 3mph in my pescador fully loaded under ideal night fishing conditions, ie not too windy.

After all, if i can get a yak that paddles 1 mph faster than another, and i expect to paddle 5-10 miles, i could save a good amount of time by going with a slightly faster yak.
