I have been sending messages, and talking to Dennis Christian who developed a technique using Mepps. This would be the same guy who just won our white bass tournament on Hubbard. So from this old die hard slab fisherman, I finally decided to try out his method. Of course I had to re-spool my reel with 10lb test, then I had to order the plain #4 Mepps. Went out to everyone's favorite hybrid hump just south of I-30, spot locked in 21 FOW, and worked on the technique. The very first drop I caught a nice fat white bass. I got better at the technique as I went on. Managed to catch 45 in less than 2 hours. 38 nice fat whites, 4 hybrid, and 2 yellow bass. I did notice two different guide boats slabbing nearby and only catching about a third of what little ole me by myself was catching. After an hour they left, while I stayed in the exact same spot catching one after another. Don't know why this method works so well, but it does. The other thing is the white bass seemed to be much bigger today, could just be today or it could be the new technique? I weighed several of them on my digital scale and most were 1.7 lbs with some 1.9 lbs., some really nice white bass. If you have not read about Dennis's story and technique you should check it out. He is trying to let everyone know how he developed it and share this method before he has departed this old world. Here is the link to his story. http://www.mepps.com/fishing-article/the-fishing-discovery-of-my-lifetime/408

Odds are high I am thinking of the wrong "favorite hybrid hump" but the levees and area south of the I-30 cut, seem to have so much submerged timber, I can barely keep vertical slabbing from hanging up.
I am not sure how I could cast across all that submerged timber.. I must be in the wrong spots.

Way to go Steve. I always keep a few Mepps in by tackle box. Pat

-rob Rob, I think I saw you out there today heading towards Robertson Park area. Yes the levees have a bunch of timber, but with good electronics, you can fish around the timber with great success. And no that is not where I was today, where I was has very little timber. I fished with 1 lure the whole time, with only one hang up.

Nice Mepps report, Mr. Steve Dennis-Christian Parker I tried mepps about 3-4 years ago but I didnt give it much time because it was rather too light and required a bit of patient for it to sink down before reeling. I did caught fish too using Mepps back then but I thought the heavier tail spinners sink faster. I still got plenty of #2 and #4 from back when I read several articles about Mepps. But after the tourney I will give the Mepps more attempts like tomorrow on Hubbard

Very nice Steve! Todd introduced me to Dennis at the tournament. It didn't hit me until later that night that I had read a great article a year or so ago on the Mepps fishing that featured Dennis. Went and bought a few Mepps after the article. The thing that was throwing me off was the light weight of the lure. I grew up slinging those Mepps! We can talk more tomorrow out on the lake... Mark and I hammered them on HH tonight for three straight hours... All thrown back.

What a great article. Thanks for sharing! I have been curious about the technique as I read several or Mr. Christians posts about catching so many varieties. I'll place my order and hopefully will share in the success!

Steve was so excited about his success today he called and told me about it. Cudos to him for a very determined effort! I had sent him a pm containing text from several of my posts from 2009/2010 giving more detail about how I locate white bass and how I use the Mepps. I'll put this out again in a separate post for those who are interested.

Dennis I have used Mepps for a very long time but only in Stock tanks for ditch pickles with very good results. I read your post a few years ago and used them then but had kind of forgot about them lately. I still have some in my tackle box and will use them again. Thanks for the reminder and all the information. Pat
