Lets say your out fishing with no idea of what the fish are biting on. What is your first go to fly?

(Cold water) Tie between elk hair caddis & PMD
(Warm water) Red/yellow deer hair popper...Works every time
(Salt water) Pink streamer...I am a dry fly junky but I can't deny the power of the pink streamer in salt water.

Cold water depends on the season ,the side of the country, tail water, free stone. So this Isvery broad. if I have to chose just blind fishing I am going to be a high stick nymph tactician fool. Warm months starting with a size12 hares ear or phesant tail followed by a 20 mirical midge or zebra. Cool months 18-20 olive hares ear followed by a 20-26 midge of some sort. Warm water I am a clouser all the way guy have caught sandies, stripers, gills, bass, crappie, drum, buffalo, carp, channel cat all on the same fly what else would I start with.

Warm water: I will always throw a small popper to find out where the fish are.
Next is the black bead head wooly bugger, which seems to catch all kinds of fish.

+1 for a wooly bugger. I also like to fish a bass popper with a size 12 zebra midge (is that still a midge?) dropped off the bend on small ponds that I've never fished.

The ONLY reason to fish with a fly rod in Texas
is to throw a popper.

Using any other type fly just means you're doing something.
