A friend and I will be heading down south to do some kayak fishing.. We will be down there the first week of June.. We've never been kayak fishing in the ocean.. We want to fish as close as we can to the bank the flats but no BTB.. Just wondering if you guys could give us tips on bait and locations where the reds or trout are out..
We're looking to fish a couple a days that week..and we need all the help we can get..
Thanks

I'm no expert, but I've fished with gold spoons and Berkleys GULP shrimp. Both produce fairly well for reds and specks. I usually fish the Bay side.

There is the Lighthouse trail & also Red Fish Bay ! Check with the bait shops, they are very helpful. You go across Red Fish Bay out of Aransas to Aransas Pass ! Good Luck ! I am planning on a June trip hopefully ! For trout there is a free Government Pier just as you get off the ferry, turn right at the first light & behind the convenience store turn right & go about a mile. You will see the pier & parking. You can launch your Yak! Watch out when the Big Tankers are coming thru ( WAVES)--Good Luck fish

Because of the wind I used lived shrimp under a cork this past weekend and it did the trick around shell with current from the wind, you can use imitation shrimp this way too I use the DOA or the Gulp. Suspending jerk baits like the paul browns original, paul browns devil, mirrodine and mirrominnow will produce too. Gold spoons in the 1/8 oz usually is a go to as well. I also carry swim baits like the DOA 3" CAL Shad or a Cokahoe Minnow in 4".

To save yourself some hassle get a Hook-N-Line upper laguna madre map and it will show shell and kayak launch spots for the area. Shamrock Isle and cove would be a good start for that time of year IMO, good luck!

Paddle out into any of the shallow grass flats at daybreak and you will be amazed at the variety and quantity of marine life. Without a map, just fish the dropoffs and open pockets in the grass. Edges of the ICW, boat channel cuts, and deeper channels coming out from the shallow grass flats should produce something. Get out EARLY and keep your eyes and ears open.

Neumie on this forum has been working on this map. It might help you with a few launch spots.

Waders string their fish but sometimes suffer a visit from unwanted men in grey suits, it's always a risk. I make floating baskets with netted material and have never had a problem. Academy sells a floating basket.

A lot of the guys along the coast use fish bags which you can find at Academy or BPS. Igloo style coolers are always a good, safe way to keep fish.
