Anyone ever fish a salt flats boat on a lake before? Seems like it would be a weird sight. All I've got is a 19' Carolina Skiff though, so I'm gonna try her on the lake some time.

I see a lot of bay boats on Texas lakes. As a matter of fact I run one, not a flats boat and not a bass boat. Besides, what does it matter what others think?

I got a buddy who used to ride his bay boat inshore and in freshwater. Fished everywhere from Texoma to Laguna Madre. He doesn't get out on his boat much anymore. Health issues. We fish the banks a lot locally now.

I have a buddy of mine that has a 14' Shoalwater flats boat. He has a place at Seadrift and lives a stones throw away from Travis. He now keeps it at home and we fish Travis all the time in it. It does get lots of stares from the party boaters at Travis but as was said above, "Who cares?" Of course he drags it to the coast. It is so small, the truck gas overhead is not much of a burden.
My bro has a Wellcraft 19' deep V CC bay boat that we take to POC all the time. We can't go skinny with it. We also take it to Gibbons Creek and Somerville to do a little crappie fishing. At those places we get stares from the bass boat guys.
It's all good.
Do it and tight lines!
Dave

I'd do it in a heartbeat. I moved to Houston and was considering buying another bass boat. But there is a lot of good saltwater and brackish water fishing as well here. After reading all the posts about bass boats in saltwater I'd rather go the other way and get a nice flats boat or shallow draft boat like the ranger intracoastal for dual purpose fishing.

Seems it wouldn't be any different than using a jon boat.

I see bay shallow flats boats on Texoma open main lake and in the Red river below the dam running the river for stripers often.. If I had one I would fish the open lakes and rivers in Texas ,Ok,AR every time I go out.. If you have one...use it,fish it,,have fun!Who cares what any one thinks about it..I even bet you would out fish all others in it!! Go for it!

I prefer salt water setups. I fished my baots on fresh water all the time and actually fished the lakes harder and can stand worse conditions because of things like self bailing cockpits. Ill never own a bass boat or anything designed for fresh water. Give me a bay boat or center consloe anyday.

I've done it quite a bit. Actually it works pretty well. Nothing like being able to go where others can't.
