I don't want to spend a ton(I don't live near the coast so my surf fishing will be limited to the week I'm in SPI) but I don't want something that is going to break on me either. http://www.basspro.com/Quantum-Omni-Surf-Spinning-Rod-and-Reel-Combo/product/10208390/Also, can anyone recommend a decently priced bait cast setup that would be good for bull reds, trout, shark in the surf?
I have a Largemouth at home....sometimes she lets me go fishing.

Looks good, just make sure your rod is long enough for what you're doing.

That's a good starter rig for small-med fish , Go with the longest rod you can find . As for a bait casting you gonna be wade fishing ? or drowning bait ? .

I want to surf fish every morning and every evening. I assume live or cut bait is the best way to catch them in the surf. I want to target Pompano, Reds, Trout, Whiting, and would like to catch at least one shark. I think the Quantum will be fine for everything but the shark. I want to do some jetty fishing with artificials for Kings. I'll use one of my freshwater rigs for that. I wouldn't mind doing some fishing in the bay with shrimp under a pop cork either. I would probably use one of my freshwater rigs for this as well.

That surf set up should be good with a 9 ft rod, just make sure you have a nice PVC pipe to put it in. It will handle big sharks as long as you have a long leader.

That will do. I would go with the 8'. You would be amazed at what you can land a shark on......
Try some DOA shrimp and a 1 oz rattle trap for kings.
