Looking for pointers on catching some bowfin's. I live close to Lavon, Hubbard, Lewisville & Grapevine.
Do not have a boat so looking for some advice on bank spots, time of the year, bait etc. Appreciate the response

If it's legal ain't no way in hell it's catch and release, it's CATCH & GREASE, except ROUGH (TRASH) Fish

I have never caught Bowfin in Lake Lavon..Not sure if they are in there or not..No telling with those things..
I have caught, landed them In Lake Ray Hubbard,, and Lake Fork is where I would go to target them..Fork has a very healthy supply of them..
I would target the mouths of creek opening to the lake...brush,rocky coves ..They will be deep in the day and shallow at night and very early morning.. daylight and before..
We use crayfish most of the time or live shad..We use to catch them alot bass fishing for bass..They are fierce fighters and MEAN fish creatures and will bite the s&%$^#*&^ out of you with the teeth they have on purpose..
We ate one a long time ago...it was pretty good actually..all white meat.. nor fish tasting at all..
when we cut its head off and gutted it.. I still remember the fish eyes in the bowfin head on the table were following us around for about 10 minutes before it stopped...That was spooky..We let all the Bowfin go after that..
I am not sure if they are in Lewisville or Grapevine lake..Fork is where I would go for them..if you really want to catch some..

i used cut bait (filet blue gill, brim) works like bowfin magnet. catch one and prepare for a fight.

I think you need to head east out of DFW to have any decent chances. As it was mentioned Fork has a bunch of them and I've caught them up to 11 lbs out there while bass fishing with lures sight fishing them in the extreme shallow water in spring and summer. If you can find one this way you can almost certainly get a strike, they are very aggressive and have destroyed more then a few of my crankbaits (straightened trebels, broken split rings, etc)

Agree with Fork being the best lake for targeting them. I always seem to get one or two while catfishing their. Use cut shad at the SRA park off 154 and I'll bet you find some. Caught some big summertime bass in that area as well. If you can't make it out to fork I have seen reports of them from hubbard, but don't know how big the population is. Never caught one out of Lewisville, Grapevine, or Lavon. Caught 3 my first trip to fork. Good luck on your quest! thumb

The Sabine River system (lake fork) is loaded with bowfin. The Trinity & it's tributaries have a very small population. I take a trip to Fork every year for bass & end up catching a lot of bowfin.

Fork it is fellows, thx for all the pointers. Thx banderapass1 for confirming it does not taste bad. I hope to catch a few and fry one to see if it tastes good. Once again tx
