Guys, I made a camera ruler for android phones to take fish pictures and also measure fish's length. Please take a look at the pics below. I went trout fishing last weekend, and did some tests with the software. It worked very well!

Hope it is helpful to you as well. The software is free and can be downloaded from the google play store. just search "camera ruler" and look for this app:

Thanks guys, if you like it please help me rate it!

YES!! Finally laugh I had been waiting for something like this. No need to carry around a ruler - it should make it so much easier to measure your fish with just your phone.

Thank you SO much Stan for developing & testing this. Look forward to sharing it with others.

P.S. - Just tried it out, but it gives me an error stating "Cannot find external storage." Any help Stan? I know for sure I have a ton of external storage space - my phone has a 32GB SD card in it. It's an HTC Sensation 4G phone - running Android Version 4.0.03

Basim, Thanks for trying out the software. Sorry for the error. I've tested it on a number of samsung models and it worked well, but haven't had chance to test it on HTC phones. Could you please check the SD card on your phone to see if there is a QLSoftwareFile folder? I will try to find a solution asap. Thanks for your feedback!!! laugh

One possible solution: did you set your phone to USB storage enabled while you tested the software? maybe you can try to disable it first.

How does this app work with the ruler and depth perception for an accurate reading? Do you have to have the camera x amount of inches/feet from the target?

Good question! Actually it uses a coin as a reference to calibrate itself. You need to put a coin beside or on the fish. Try to make the camera parallel to the ground, and keep the fish and the coin close to the center of the camera view.

The software will automatically search for circular shapes in the camera view, and draw them in red circles. Then, you can tap on the detected coin that is locked by a red circle. The red circle on the coin will turn into green, which tells you the software is going to use this green circle as a reference to calculate the size of the fish.

Please download and give it a try. It will be quite straight forward when you use it. laugh
