My regular Texas rig and shakey head techniques have slowed down so I decided to try a drop shot. Read all the forums and viewed videos on YouTube. Did as they said and set up my spinning reel with a vmc size 1 spin shot hook, a 1/8 weight and various soft plastics in June bug and watermelon. Just used 10 lb mono instead of fluorocarbon and hooked up over 15 in an hour and half. Really sold on the technique but about 60% of the fish spit the hook and I did not land. Frustration!

So today I rigged up my baitcaster with the same setup except with a regular 1/0 EWG hook and tied it like they say on the forums and videos. Caught about 10 with about a 10% hook spit. I casted it farther than the spinning rig and felt more comfortable with the hook set and playing the fish. I guess I can't believe everything on the Internet.

My question, is there a better hook to use or is the EWG ok in the long run?

I use a "J" hook from Matzuo and rig a 5.5" needle worm texas rig. It's great around stumps, debris, etc... keeps you from getting hung up. The hook is really sharp and holds well.

First off VMC has to be the worst hook for dropshot(spinshot included). Use an Owner RigN hook in 1/0 or 2/0 and have fun catching em! We live in Texas so think Like a Texan....Outside the box. LOL! We make a dropshot rig that eliminates the thought process and lets you catch fish with minimal effort. The ewg u are using does the job! Keep at it....there are some things on the interweb you can believe:)

I'm not fan of those spinshot deals. I use plain old Mustad/Gamakatsu drop shot hooks for the shorter worms and a offset shank for bigger baits on a casting rod with no trouble.

I use the Stand out hook. It's killer and hooks them good,I use a swivel about 6" above the hook.

I don't have trouble getting fish to bite a drop shot just with hooking them... what is the best way to set the hook with a drop shot?

IMHO people make it complicated i love to drop shot and dont miss many fish... number 1 or 1/0 hook any make or model man.. just make sure hook is facing up.. if its not run your line back through the hook eye and it will stand up facing up. now if you are using something small like a roboworm or small trick type shakey worm then remember you are gonna get alot of brim pecking sometimes... i nose hook most of the time sometimes other ways and always leave the hook exposed and facing up.... the fish basically set the hook themselves buddy... just a pull up and they are either on or not... if not dont move just keep working that bait they will hit it... i never set the hook really just a firm pull straight up and boom fish on... just the way i do it ... tons of other ways ... give it a try and make it simple cuz it really is...

I was learn't on a 1/0 Gammy drop shot hook. The only adaptation I've implemented is bending the hook out to get behind the lip on fish.

Here's a great, quick video on drop shotting:

For small baits... 41/2" roboworms I use nothing but the size 1 gamakatsu splilt shot drop shot hook. I have caught up to 10 pound fish on this hook. It's all about the drag and how you have it set

I appreciate the input and I will try your hook suggestions. Really sold on the technique, it triggers many more strikes than I thought. Most under two lbs but did hook two over 4 lbs. but lost them. Hopefully new hooks will help with that. Thanks again.
