Thanks so much to everyone who responded to my question! I've never been in the Big Spring, TX area, but my girlfriend visited there -- um -- a LOT of years ago. She was impressed with the dry heat + cold nights. At that time, people with good ventilation didn't even need air conditioning. They would close windows and drapes all day, and open them up at night. She thought that was wonderful -- but she didn't remember anything about wind. Maybe because she's originally from SD, where wind at 20mph is a "calm" day, and it only gets less calm from there! I would check this out for yourself, imho most of West Texas is a hell hole. We would probably de annex that part of the state but they would charge us twice as much for oil. It's a big state, unless you have a job waiting, a really good one, I would look at other options. But that's me.

I have been to big spring many times recently, find somewhere else farther east, much farther. the only place in west texas that is bearable is el paso, manchu lives there so its covered. if you want fishing move to the temple area, sulphur springs area, greeneville, pilot point/mckinney, tyler, or any of the small towns in between.

Don't listen to them guys about all that area North and East....while not the wasteland of the West, the place to be for fishing is Houston and the eight counties around it.
Plenty of very good bass fishin' and saltwater to boot.
Lots of good jobs 'round here too....

I am surprised and a little embarrased by all the West Texas haters on here. Make up your own mind with a visit. While it's true we may not have all the frills and lace of the I35 corridor, we have our ways and are pretty proud of them.
At least my boat and truck are paid for, woo hoo!

But if you come to Texas looking for opportunity then West Texas is where you want to be. Lowest unemployment in the whole country! Hard working people that keep fuel running for all those haters on the East side. Just a bunch of cowboys, farmers and and friendly folks out west.

Joneo, These boys are funnin' with you just a bit, but the truth is the wind is a constant force to be dealt with. Around here in the Dallas area, at Hubbard, Tawakoni and CedarcCreek, a "pontoon " boat will do just fine.I had a 18' Basstracker for about 13 years, only real problem was towing , felt like a parachute behind me. Bright side, you can go out in almost any weather. BTW, you will need an A/C in the house.

The attitude projected by some on this site is not what you have to look forward to. A strong welcoming handshake and cold beer is what's offered here. Come on down. You folks on here should be ashamed of yourselves.

Joneo - if you do decide to come down, in spite of all the West Texas haters on here, it's a fine place to live. BTW - I grew up in the DFW metroplex and except to visit once a year at the most, I haven't been back since '87 and that's for my annual Rangers game.

If I could be close to a lake I'd move to west Texas. Not better people, but a better percentage of better people, just from my limited experience. It would be a great place to teach and coach.

I know a little about it since my late son played for South Lake Carrol in the '80's.

I've lived in east and west Texas. The truth is I would rather be a poodle in west Texas than a prince in east Texas. Salt of the earth good people.
