I could sure use some advice. I have a 1995 Mercury 115 and it is making a tapping/knocking noise at all rmps. I took it to a shop close to me and they went through the fuel system for about 650 and then told me to run it. I did but they knew it was still making the same noise. I took it back today and they are going to look deeper. It is obvious it is something mechanical.
I guess a big question is does anyone fix something like that instead of throwing a whole new upper end of the motor at it? If a rod is knocking or something similar can just that be fixed.
They said I have great compression and there is no metal anywhere they have looked so far.
Thanks a bunch

Man that's a tough one. It really depends on what they find in the cylinder. If the walls and pistons or good it could be a wrist pin or connecting arm and those can be replaced. But it could be so many things causing that. Is this new noise or has it progressively got louder?

My question is: Why they went thru the fuel system and charged you $650, when they knew something else was wrong with it? That doesnt make sense to me. And why would they tell you to just run it anyway. If it were mine, i would take it to someone else.

The noise started out of the blue and has not got any louder. I have not been running it since it started other than the other day after I picked it up.
Thanks

Need to drop the lower unit and see if noise is still present.

that's what i was thinking too. could be in the gear case. pull the bottom drain plug and look for metal and milky oil.
like the other guys. could be alot of things.

I would drop the lower and run the engine briefly. That's typical of bearing in the lower unit.

If not, you should be asking for your $650 back. With regards to your problem, I also think you should start by checking your lower unit out. Change the oil and check for metal/milky looking oil before you go dropping it completely.
