welcome to the forum! you will get a number of opinions here, ultimately its what you are comfortable with. proangler makes a great rod,and in various lengths,8-12',as well as bnm.the reels, whether spinning, spincast or baitcast can be purchased at walmart or academy.i hope this helps,as i'm still learning myself.once the veterans on the forum chime in,you will get tons of replies.best of luck to you!

Sorry to be so cynical but this looks exactly like a setup for a commercial. Welcome to the forum!

What have you been using and what is it doing or not doing now that makes you want to "upgrade"?

You should see a whole bunch of pro angler suggestions in a bit.

BPS Microlite Graphite work well for me. They have models ranging from 3'6" - 7'6". From UL - ML. I like the 6' L the most; it's a one-picec, can cast quite a distance and get get a nice size crappie out of some thick stuff. A Pflueger Trion is a pretty good mate; a President is better. Should come in at under $100.

I just upgraded my equipment as well. Just got my rod in today as a matter of fact. I was casting out in the yard a little while ago and love it already. Can't wait to catch some fish. I spent right at $100 and this is what I went with:

8ft Pro Angler with cork handle ($42)
Abu Garcia Cardinal STX ($49.99)
Suffix Siege Neon Tangerine 6lb ($7.99)

Before this, I was using a Shakespeare combo that I bought years ago for channel cat fishing. It was a big ol spincast reel with 12 or 15lb test. I can't remember. I could put fish in the boat, but it's not near as much fun as lighter tackle.

Mine is a 10' pro angler. Good rods I have 6 of them. Lots of backbone, but much lighter than most other jigging rods. Plays a big role when your holding it for hours. I prefer a baitcaster on my jigging rod... handles heavier line as well as light line and it easier to work with than a spinning reel. I have a Abu black max on mine with 10# neon tangerine suffix works great. That's setup cost about $90, but you could get a cheaper baitcaster and be even less.

That Shimano combo for $100 looked interesting. Good luck and I hope you catch a bunch and soon!

I have more rods and reels one man should ever own. I want recommend a particular brand but If will say get you a med light action rod. A ultralight simply does not have enough backbone to pull a big slab out of cover. I use spinning reels but know quite a few folks who like bait casters. It's all personal preference.

Would you also suggest upping the line test? Kind of like the bass guys do to compensate for dragging weeds out along with the fish? Haven't had a backbone problem with the buggy whip from the boat but I can definitely see issues from the bank.
