Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Yea, even before the fire at Big Pines Lodge it wasn't the same after the old man died. I still remember the little gun shop he ran off to the side in there. It's gone further downhill wince the new owners rebuilt it IMO.

Mr. Williamson was a real character....Betty turned it over to her niece (IIRC) to manage after George died and it started a down hill spiral (also IMHO)....at one time they had the best fish, fried shrimp, slaw and jalapeno hush puppies in the world....

Those Jalapeno Hush Puppies were amazing. I have some of the best memories of tying up the boat on their dock after a day of fishing with my dad or one of my friends and going in there and having to wait an hour just to get a seat. It was always worth it though. Great trip down memory lane!

x2!!

There was nothing like finishing up a sunburned day of fishing on caddo with a meal at Big Pines. Wife and I are spending a long weekend on Caddo this Memorial weekend. Planning to ride up the river to Big Pines for a meal. Starting to have doubts now...

Why is it so difficult to recreate some of the good times we had when we were kids?

I think it would be worth trying again. It's hard to top the original though. Also, it's not like there are many options out that way. If you go, please let me know how it is!

SpinFly....it is kinda hit and miss....last time we ate my whole fish was great.....my wife's fried shrimp were sub-par...old days they put sliced onion, peppers, pickles and lemons on a plate and put 'em down with your slaw and hushpuppies....not anymore.....they were out of lemons for your tea also....place is cleaner and nicer but the days of a fire in the big fireplace and visiting with Betty and George and sharing your table with anyone from lake hermits, DPS Troopers to million dollar attorneys is long gone...

This is not in this area but I grew up in Mobile and Pensacola and we used to go to a place named Palmer's on the causeway to the east of Mobile...best seafood I have ever put in my mouth....Fri and Sat evening/night there would be a line wrapped all the way around the restaurant...

this was late 50's early 60's
