Lake Fork is fishing well now with lots of spawning fish present all over the lake. There are lots of patterns and techniques working well at the present time. The key to success is to keep moving until you start getting bit, don't pull into an area and stay for three hours unless you getting but. We are starting to regularly see fish guarding fry on the southern end of the lake so I'm predicting the spawn is close to 65-70% complete. If your looking to get a lesson on sight fishing in this season you need to book you a trip NOW. I am running a
TFF special for a short time to finish booking a few of my open dates, $250 1/2 days or $350 Full days!! I supply everything but sunglasses, beverages and lunch on full day trips. This special is good for anyone who books a trip that is before June 8.
Patterns & Presentations
Pre/Post Spawn:
We have been using Drop Shots, Carolina Rigs & Square Bills on secondary points to catch these fish. We rig the drop shot spooled on 15# Power-Pro Braid and a 3 foot Seaguar InvisX leader in 15# with a 1/4oz Picasso Tungsten weight, 1/0 Owner Rigging Hook and a Zoom Finesse Worm in Junebug or Watermelon Purple. If you put your boat in 8-10' you will be in a good depth to catch fish all day.
The light Carolina rig is on a 20# InvisX mainline & 15# InvisX leader. 1/4-3/8oz weight depending on the wind, 3/0 Owner Offset hook and a Zoom Trick Worm, Baby Brush Hog or a Centipede. Color selections consist of Green Pumpkin, Watermelon Red or Junebug. Productive depths range from 2-10'.
Our square bill pattern is simple, the wind is your friend! It's often times annoying to fish windy points but often times very rewarding. 15# InvisX will handle timber and big fish like a champ! My goto color is shad, it will get you bit even on the tuffest days! Those post spawn fish are hungry and on the feed, this is a run and gun pattern so if your not getting bit on one spot just keep moving until you find a wad and goto town on em!
Spawn/Sight fishing:
We have been using a 3/8oz pegged Picasso weight, 2/0 Offset Owner hook with a Zoom Speed Craw in Green Pumpkin or Alabama Craw on my spawning fish with great success all year. Falcon Cara Finesse Jig is a great rod to use when flipping to spawning fish because it is a medium length rod that has a perfect tip for giving your bait action while having enough back bone to turn even the biggest of bass. 15# Seaguar InvisX is a great line to spool on your Lews Tournament Pro reel because of its great durability. Lots of fish are spawning off of the bank this year, often times an the first few trees towards deep water. A good set of polarized sunglasses like a set of Costas will help you spot the fish. When you see the "green spot beds" you really have to look hard as the fish blend in very well and will often times stay still as you cruise right by them. If your vision isn't great try blind flipping a craw into and sand spot, green spot or spawning bed looking area you see as soon as you see it.
Shad Spawn:
The shad spawn is currently a few weeks underway and is only going to get better. You want to be on the water bright and early to capitalize in this often times phenomenal bite. Topwater poppers, Picasso spinnerbaits and square bills are my favorite baits to use. This is a bite that can often times be all about location so keep moving until you start seeing schools of shad flickering on the surface or cruising on flats. The fish feeding on these balls of shad are hungry and ready to be caught. For you fisherman who like an A-Rig this is a great time to pull out your Picasso Baitballs, rigged with Zoom Swimming Fluke Jrs or Keitech Easy Shiners on Picasso Smartmouth jig heads! Most of these shad will be in 4' or less .
Fish Guarding Fry:
15# InvisX with a Zoom Fluke in Green Pumpkin or Watermelon Red is deadly when tossed just passed schools of fresh fry. There are often very protective fish hanging just under or very near these balls of fry. Most of these fry schools are located on or very near stumps or shoreline vegetation, often times on the shady side. A Topwater popper is also a great choice to trigger a violent strike. 15# Berkley Big Game & Yellow Magic or Rico is my goto popper. Natural colors like Bone or Albino are best. Don't forget a wacky worm if a popper or fluke won't get bit consistently. A Zoom Fineness worm in the same color can often help put a few more fish in the boat. Don't forget to put a little Spike-it on the tail and 3/4 of a lead nail in the head! Fry will range in depths from 1"- 15' so just keep looking around.
