I've seen these older reels before and as I recall they seemed to performed great. Was there ever issues with parts failing? I've got a buddy that's literally gave up fishing and I may take it off his hands, if the price is right.
Thoughts?

Best flipping reel ever made, period.
You know the old saying
If it floats, flys, or f___s it is always cheaper to rent!
You have to decide which is more important.

Best flipping reel ever made, period. Then I wonder why it was discontinued? Seems kinda of a bulky reel. If I recall correctly, it also carried a hefty price tag. Back in the day, I thought it was one of their top of the line reels.

Because all things change. If you feel that way about my comment, you already made your decision.

I'm more concerned if there were problems with the mechanism when you engage the reel. Does anyone know if there were problems with this reel?

I couldn't resist the temptation. Bought the reel and AllStar TX38 rod for $50 yesterday.

Out of date? Yes
Heavy? Lighter than my Calcuttas, about the same as my Curados.
All of my equipment is out of date by today's standards, but don't tell the bass that!

Best flipping reel ever made, period. I wouldnt go that far with that reel.. Its a tad out dated and heavy.. Outdated only by time standards. It is built on the Curado 200BSF platform and that is one of the best reels ever built. I own the more up-to-date reels as well, but I never hesitate to pick up my Castaic. It is my go-to flipping reel and I have never thought "out-of-date" when using it. You made an incredible buy and good luck catching the bigguns!

After getting it home, I started showing it a little love with a couple drops of reel oil and a good wipe down and it performs great. Smooth as can be!!!

I think I'm going to hang on to this one for a while. I'm also looking to get the Super Free model.

I've been using this reel quite often and fell in love with the simple flick of my thumb to engage the reel. I loaded it with 15 lb mono, put all the brakes to the in/off position and been pitching 1/8 oz lures to every little stickup I can see. Love the reel!!!

I have the same reel in storage. I used to bass fish and I can attest to it, being a great feel and plenty of back-bone, great flipping ability. I had it mounted (still is) on a "Cara". That was the best feeling reel combo outside of the curado Mitchell combo, that I used.
Probing brush for crappie is my game!

It is very good reel problem is parts are no longer available I guess Shimano figures if you can't get a reel repaired you will buy a new one.
