Im pretty sure my carbs are not in sync, referring to the air/fuel mixture. It idles rough and stalls at first touch of the throttle. I recently replaced fuel filter, thermostats, all fuel lines and primer bulb, plugs, and took carbs off and cleaned overnight by soaking in ChemDip and adding new gasket kit. I think in the process of cleaning and installing carbs i accidentally moved the adjustment skrew. Is there a factory setting for these adjustment skrews? They are currently backed out 1 1/2 turns.

I removed plugs and noticed black oil/gas liquid on end of plugs, im assuming im running too rich? Any help would be appreciated.

Check valves, don't forget the little one hiding at the bottom of the reed block.

Alright i will look at the check valves first. Can these just be cleaned out or do they need to be replaced?

(quote) I think in the process of cleaning and installing carbs i accidentally moved the adjustment skrew. Shurly you removed the idle air adjustment screws when you clean the carbs. I don't know why but I get a image of you putting the assembled carb in the carb cleaner. Floats too high and a leaking needle-seat can cause over rich condition. With motor running look at the throats of the carbs, if you see fuel dripping, that's your problem.

Forgot to mention. I replaced needles and seats when i cleaned carbs. It may indeed be floats set too high not allowing needles to seat fully. Should floats be even with carbs when held upside down? Or is there a diferent method to insuring they are set properly?

The floats have to be set on the closed and the open. They have a stop built into the float arm that will limit the down movement of the float.

Ok so i took the carbs off and noticed the top 2 carbs floats were off quite a bit. Adjusted floats so they set level with carb while holding inverted. This showed improvement with idle and lower RPM's. Im still convinced it is a fuel problem after checking compression.

The boat starts and idles fine on hose, but when on the lake it doesn't have the power to get the boat on plane. I checked the compression today and the left three cylinders were all at 125 psi and the right three cylinders were all at 130 psi (standing behind engine viewing from behind).

Do those carbs have idle air adjustment screws? If they do run all in then back out 3/4 turn to start with. Make shure their is an air gap between the throttle cam and roller.

Sounds like tha only thing left in tha fuel part is tha mech pump. Think it would show up at idle though if its leakin'. You can "bump" tha enrichner when ya hammer it and see if it does anything. If it helps then it is a fuel problem. If stalls ya might wanna take a look at tha stator. Whats tha max rpm it turns now. Will usually onlt turn 2500 ta 3000 if high side is bad..............

Does it sound real throaty while trying to accelerate? Like too much air? If so you might check your reeds for a busted reed. Of maybe even a bad coil with one cylinder not firing. I would check those first.

The carbs do have air mixture skrews. I was told today that the factory setting is about 1 1/2 turns out, does this sound about right?

I do not remember the max RPM's i hit when i was out, i will take a look when i go back out this weekend. Im definately hittimg 2500, i would guess around 3500 but will check this weekend while under load at the lake.

What is the easiest way to diagnose a bad coil? I will look at the reeds before i head out as well and look for damage. Thanks.

The 1&1/2 turns out is only a starting reference point. Have you checked to see if its getting full throttle at the carb butterfly`s?

If you have a spark checker then that's the easiest way. One way you can do it is remove all the plugs, install the wires on the plugs and use plastic pliers and hold them near the cylinder block while someone cranks the engine and see if it jumps the gap. Be careful not to shock yourself and do it one plug at a time.

That engine should be running near 5600-5800 WOT. If you aren't there than you are down on power or not getting WOT. Do like Gary said and check your WOT at the butterflies.

Also if you have a bad stator, a good clue for that is the RPM jump around at idle.

Any way you can record what it sounds like when you try to accelerate? I would love to hear it and that would help a lot.
