My set up is the 7-6 Veritas MH fast action with 20lb mono. I usually throw 1/2 oz flipping jigs or heavy brush football jigs. I usually " cross their eyes when i set the hook, but I also kayak fish, which is hard to do without going swimming with the fish. Lol. maybe that has been my problem... Not a vertical hookset. So if I hookset from say, 7 o'clock to 2 o'clock... Then that may be my problem? So braid is a better choice too? Thanks for the input guys. I enjoy jig fishing, but not when my hands are on my head in frustration. Ha

If u are fishing from a yak defiantly braid since u can't set te hook as hard you will want the zero stretch line.

I use a 7ft 4in M/H (5 power) Dobyns Extreme 745 rod with a 6-1 gear ratio reel (Shimano Core) and 20 pound fluorocarbon line with a Viper XP, or Santone flip jig and don't have any problems loosing fish. Both jigs are designed very well and most of the time the fish is stuck in the roof of the mouth where it should be.
Some jig head designs are prone hooking the fish in the side of the mouth and thats when you will loose more fish than when they are stuck in the roof of the mouth.

Awesome. Thanks. I may put on some braid and see if that helps some since I'm not always one a solid surface. Has anyone tried any jigs from largemouthtackle.com? I like the eye set on his jigs. Thanks again fellas.

I lost a good fish yesterday that would have got us a nice check, I caught 6 and lost one, I think if the fish is on the bed they do not eat the jig so that causes misses. I usually use a 7 to 7'4" medium heavy with braid fluro leader, never was a fan of the heavy action rods.

In my experience a jig is my number one bait for not losing fish. I agree with setting the hook hard. I sweat them coming off on a crankbait, but a jig is golden for me.

I switched over to the Buckeye two part jig. It is a jig that has a detachable head so when you hook up with a bass, it cannot use the weight of the bait as leverage to throw your jig. Kinda like a Texas rig. My landing percentage had gone to about 90% with this jig

Switch your line to flouro or braid. If you continue to have this issue switch to a heavy action rod. If you do trim the weed guard, just take a little off. No need to go all the way to the hook. Also +1 on the Santone Jigs they are great. My favorite flippin Jigs are still the Lunker Lure Rattleback Jigs. Inexpensive and better hookup ratio than any other jig I've fished.

Are you using a ewg hook? Try a round bend Ive' jumped off many big fish on ewg hooks fishing deep water 10 to 35 feet deep ,or maybe you need a harder hook set.
When in doubt set the hook..Retie often

I have started trying to teach myself how to be a good jig fisher the last year or so. I always lose a lot more fish than I would with a reg worm. The bass usually slam my jig, I set the hook and then lose them 3-5 seconds into the battle. Is there a trick to keeping them hooked up? Thanks. I need the help, been losing too many fish lately. Ha What kind of jig? Flipping jig, Football or?

I was with Haverkamper when he lost the good fish on Texoma. He did everything right, including crossing it's eyes. Sometimes the hook is just not in a good place. You can do everything right and if they jump just right, they can come off. Happened to everyone that fishes a lot. Whats funny is that he threw in the same spot and caught a four pounder on the very next cast.

Ha What kind of jig? Flipping jig, Football or? Mainly flipping jigs. But I have had the same problem a few times with a heavy brush football head. The football head I've been using is 3/4.. Does that make it even easier for the bass to throw the lure?
