Hey guys, just got turned on to this forum from a user on another site I am on.

I am looking for some suggestions for a float tube for fly fishing out of.

I am short and fat. 5'8" about 250 but I fluctuate 20 pounds either direction.

Looking for a float tube that would be a good fit for me. I am confused after looking at different ones and reading reviews from folks that bought one and probably use it 2 x a year, lol.

Of course I'd like to have the Cadillac version for $50 like everyone but lets put a $300 limit on my options. If I can find something for $200 or less I can get it now.

I appreciate any help and advice.

Also, anyone know how to rig up a fly rod holder on one of these?

Tubes vary as much as the users do. I'd recommend trying a few out first to see what your wants/needs may be. I personally use either the Nevada Caddis tube or the front open tube from bass pro. Sit a little higher in the caddis, which is great in colder weather. You can buy fly rod holders from where you get your tube.

Personally, I wouldn't start out with a $300 tube until you're sure you're going to use it and enjoy tubing. It's not for everyone. But for those who do enjoy it, man, nothing beats it!!!

Hey thanks for the info. I guess my main concern is finding one that would support my weight I guess. I'd prefer to spend as little as possible of course but I was willing to pay up to $300 for one if needed.

I have kayak fished for several years but I was around a float tube this weekend and I think I'd really like it.

So do you think that Caddis would support my weight?

Partner Im with you.
Im a big guy - two years ago I weighed over 330 lbs, now Im down to 260.
Ive used tubes for over 50 years, all over the country.
If you get a cheap floater you will be buying another one in a year or two; same for waders. You get what you pay for.
That doesnt mean you have to spend a fortune. I have used Caddis for a while, I now have three. As WMB said the Nevada should work fine for you, I like the Pro II Nav but is discontinued and I need a new bladder so Im using a Navigator and it suits me fine.
Im looking at a TOGIAK, it is less than $200 and has a 300 lb capacity.
As WMB said find out first if you like this kind of fishing before you invest a lot of money.
BTW BASS has White River Waders on clearence for $70.
Feel free to PM me if you just want to talk.

This one falls within you price range and has a weight limit of 300 pounds. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Outcast-SUPER-FA...=item4d0c4f0124
I own a outcast tube and I'm quite happy with it even after 5 years of use.

You still won't catch as many fish as Cliff.

That ain't no lie. He can bring home a stringer full out of a bathtub.

I think he goes fishing with them stuffed in his pants.

Guys I appreciate the help. I am going over to basspro Sunday and check them out. Let you know what I end up with.

Anyone else have any suggestions I appreciate it.

I already have a good pair of orvis stocking foot waders.

Your weight will not be an issue. As I'm not small by any stretch of the imagination, and weigh a lil more than you. It will hold you just fine. If you want to take a run on one of mine, see what you like, that won't be a problem.

These are from today. Mr Lee is about 180, me, well, a bit more. And we're both in the caddis tubes.

I might just do that and thanks for offering. I was looking more seriously at the basspro one you mentioned and the togiak.

If that basspro one was pretty good I could afford to get me and my wife both one. She is up for trying this as well. She loves camping and fly fishing as well. Ties our flies too.

So are in the metroplex area? I am in Tyler.

Be interested in going fishing with ya too sometime after seeing those stringers of fish, lol.

Again thanks for your help.

I'm in Venus, which is south of DFW.

I've had mine for 6 years, and just replaced the bladder in it. So, for a $100 tube, that's not bad at all. The other one I have (same model, different color) I got off Craig's list 4 years ago and it's doing fine. The replacement bladder runs $30 + tan and shipping. Total $41 and change.

I'm sure we'll get that way for a fishin trip. We go every Monday to a different lake. Just to stir it up some. Fishin home lake can get kinda....boring? That's not the right word because fishing is never boring. But you know what I mean smile

You can check out Academy as well. They carry the Caddis tubes like where's my bobber has.

I recently bought a fishcat4 for $199. Here is a link to my post.
http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/8863674/FishCat4#Post8863674

The Caddis is much lighter than the fishcat4.

I do like my new fishcat4 and can carry it a decent ways at 14 pounds. I gave my boy my Caddis. It is light enough he can carry it.

Hey that Fish Cat only supports 250#'s right? I am right at that and don't want to get a tube where I already have it maxed out. That's a super deal on it and I'd be interested but I was pretty sure the weight limit was 250.

I did go to academy today at lunch and they don't have any they carry in stock. They have to be ordered.

I am not too far from the Bossier BassPro so I will be checking them out this Sunday.

Probably a dumb question but if you don't know, you just don't know, lol. So do you need a PFD are is the float tube your PFD?

The correct answer for pfd is always yes. I don't wear one, as its super hard to find ones that fit me. I tube with at least one other person, the whole buddy system and all. And usually tube pretty close to the bank (100yds or so) that I can swim back if need be. Jiggin el gets on me about not wearing one, and I know I should...
