Paid off truck yesterday and finance company said to re-title to get lienholder off the title. I have never done this. I always wait until I sell. Should I be doing this? I have 3 titles like this. One truck, boat, and motor.

Are the titles signed by the former lien holder showing the lien is released? That's all you need.

As a retiree of the Tx DMV, I can tell you that in Tx, you are good to go as long as the lienholder correctly signed off on the title AND as long as your title is not lost or destroyed. If you do not have the title signed by the lienholder, then you do not have proof that the lien has been released. Now suppose that (XYZ Bank) has gone out of business and cannot be found, or if the lienholder was Mr. ABC and he moved to another state and you have no way to contact him. The records will still show that there is a lien and even though the debt has been paid, the lienholder must be the one who applies for a duplicate or new title. Yes, there are procedures to get a new title. BUT it is a lot simpler to just take your title to the county tax office now and apply for a clear title. The $10 title fee could save you a lot of frustration.
