1. Wrap a string such as a fishing line around the bend of the hook. Get a good grip on the string.
2. Stabilize the area on a flat surface if possible. While pushing down on the eye of the hook, apply a firm quick jerk to the string, parallel to the shank. Sterilize and bandage.

I hooked my little brother in the leg with a hook one time and we didn't want to try to pull it there so we packed up and when we were walking to our car a guy was just getting there and he pulled it out just like that,it looked pretty painless. 1. Wrap a string such as a fishing line around the bend of the hook. Get a good grip on the string.
2. Stabilize the area on a flat surface if possible. While pushing down on the eye of the hook, apply a firm quick jerk to the string, parallel to the shank. Sterilize and bandage.

I spent 15 years working in an ER. The technique doesn't work on every "hooked" situation. Different hooks and at different depths in the skin and some people are not tolerant of the pain, like kids.
Use all hook removal methods with caution and if you aren't sure, seek professional help! It is possible to do some serious damage if you just grab and pull!

You are so right about the barbs, my oldest stepped on a large trebble with only one barb going in. It was quite a challenge and painful, but we got it, went to the dr. This morning for a couple shots.
I pinch the barbs but not on this one.
