Hey there guys,

I am heading down to Powderhorn Lake (with my kayak) in a couple of weeks to fish the grass shorelines for reds and drift for trout. I was thinking I might try and go into some of the shallow marshes to try my hand at sight casting as well.

Never done this type of fishing, but it looks like there might be some areas that could work.

I am planning on launching from Indianola marina in my kayak and (on Google Earth) it looks like there might be some marshes immediately west of my launch as well as some areas along the north shoreline that give access to some of the marshes.

Anyone ever have in luck back in there? And if that area is not really good or accessible, if there any other close by area that might be worth exploring.(Old Town Lake, Blind Bayou, etc)

Not looking for honey holes, but would love any advice on if Powderhorn provides this kind of fishing or if I should stick to standard strategies and try out the sightcasting in another area. Thanks for any help.

I have fished Powderhorn about 4 or 5 times, mostly in the eastern 1/3 of the lake, so that is the area I am most familiar with.

BTW - I have been on this site as "Demar", but could not get my account to login, so I re-registered. Thanks.

Sean

There's a spot to launch at the little bridge on 1289 that will get you into the very back side of powderhorn lake. Never fished it but I've always wanted to

I'm planning on going this weekend 26th, 27th, 28th and doing the same thing. I've taken my little alluminum boat back in there before but this time I'll be in the kayak. I didn't wade last time but planning on it this time. Do ya'll know what kind of bottom is in there ? Is it pretty much the same depth the entire lake or are there drop off's ? Any help/tips would be appreceiated. I didn't have any luck last time but really we didn't get to fish that much in there. I did catch a 52 inch black drum off of Magnolia Beach though on that trip. Anyway if you see someone in a green Ocean Prowler come by and say hi. I'll probably be by myself, girlfriend wants to take the dogs so that rules her out of kayaking this time.

Lots of gators in Powderhorn. I wouldn't recommend wading.

It's not the gators, it's thigh deep poot mud that'll make it a not fun day in a hurry.

True, but being stuck like a cow in a mud hole sure would make it easier on them to come take a taste.

We made it out without getting eaten by the gators. I half expected to see something way back in those marshes in the skinny channels. There was some deep mud, but we stayed in the yaks and had a great day. Fished with a local named David who was showing us some of his fishing spots.

Got my first Texas Trio and the guy we were fishing with limited on Reds. Big ones. Really cool day out there except for the brutal wind.

Thanks for all of the posts and advice.

Sean
