Ok guys. What's the truth about injection oils. Is yamaha/mercury brands any better than pennzoil or Citco brands?? What's the difference in oil for 150 hp and less or greater than 150 hp. Thanks in advance.

All I know is I'm not taking any chances with my 175 merc. It gets quicksilver oil exclusively. I ran havoline and penzoil in my first boat and had to rebuild that engine. Not sure if oil caused it or not but I ain't taking any chances with this one..

Back in the day when money was tight I ran the cheapest TCW3 oil from Walmart in a Faststrike 150 with zero issues. Now that money isn't tight I run the DFI oil in my 200 Optimax.

I can't prove it, but this must use OUR brand of oil is BS. But they leave enough doubt in your mind that we pay the extra money just in case it's true. As far as DFI vs Premium Plus, I understand the only difference is DFI has some detergent. Does that justfiy something like twice the price? I guess.

My last Opti I ran Pennzoil Premium Plus instead of Quick Silver DFI and never had a problem.

Does Merc have thier own refineries to make the special quicksilver? I don't think so.

Just wish someone would put it to a sceintific test to either prove or disprove the theory.

Ii really don't think it matters between any of the major oils . Again, I'm not taking any chances. I really don't feel good about mixing oils either. If they would have had evinrude oil.in my boat when I bought it I would probably be running that today instead of quicksilver. I don't use walmart oil in my truck either, not worth a 6k $ engine... I try to use motorcraft parts in my ford when possible, guess its my dads mechanic influence on me.

Just FYI Quicksilver Oils are blended by Citgo. It is blended to Mercury's Specifications. The additive package is specified by Mercury, but the Base Oil is not always the same, they will buy from different supplier depending on Price!

With that said. I have ran my previous Mercury on many different brands of oil with no problems, but I only run Quicksilver in my Pro XS.

It is extremely rare that the Oil used is the main cause of a major failure.

Thanks, that's the most specific information I've heard on the subject.

I'll also add, once you start with a particular oil, try to stay with it. Personally, I've run every Mercury EFI and Optimax I've ever owned on Pennzoil Premium Plus and never had a minutes trouble. It looks like Mystik Lubricants is making a push into the boating market, I wouldn't be afraid of Mystik at all. I believe the outboard manufacturers want you to buy their oils just as another revenue stream for them. They put just enough doubt in your head to sway most. But, it's like most everything else, run what you feel best using.

I only use yamalube in mine a little more expensive but they dang sure wont be able to blame a failure on type of oil I ran so to me its worth the extra money. Also I don't get to run my boat as much as others with my job either so cost is no issue.

two stroke oils by any manufacture has to meet a specific rating, such as tcw3. how many motor oils are on the market? we all run a different oil in the same car. car manufactures can not tell you what brand of oil to run, and neither can outboard manufactures. i ran valvoline tcw3 for years without any oil related failure. at the present time, i am running cabela's semi-synthetic that has been on sale for 13.99 a gal. a buddy of mine has been running this in his opti-max for at least 6 years, and it is still running like a top. just be sure that the oil you choose does meet or exceed the manufactures specification code, such as tcw3. i am not for sure what the oil specs are for some of the really new motors.

I have a friend that owns a chemical production company and produces 2 stroke oil. He bootles it in yellow, blue, clear and just about any other color jug you'll see out there. I'm not sayin....I'm just sayin......

Only difference in the oil is the additives they put in. Such as detergents. All TCW 3 oil meets the same requirements
