Wondering if you folks could post pics of all different kinds of perch and say what they are...if they have other names they go by then I would like to know those as well. I've recently been getting into the little fish and its been a blast.

A buddy and I caught almost 100 this past weekend and just got a few pics. Wondering what they are.

The top fish is a male bluegill with some coppernose in it, though it looks like probably a mix of coppernose and northern-strain. The middle fish is predominantly, possibly 100%, coppernose. The bottom fish is a female bluegill, most likely northern-strain.

To quote Featherduster above..."Wondering if you folks could post pics of all different kinds of perch and say what they are...if they have other names they go by then I would like to know those as well."

I don't think anyone addressed your original question. Like I said on your other post, knowing all the various kinds of panfish is just half the fun. I can always tell a good fisherman when they catch a fish and say "Wow, that is a nice bluegill, redear, longear etc." versus the normal..."You caught a perch."

So anyway I commend you for trying to learn the various species. Below is a link to the TPWD species page. Go down to the "sunfishes" and it gives you a good description (with pictures) of all the various panfish found here in Texas. It may take a few times/trips before you get the id's down, but if you stick with it (versus calling them all perch) you will be identifying them in no time.

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/landwater/water/aquaticspecies/inland.phtml

And as for nick names...I think we all pretty much call the Rio Grande Cichlids just "Rios". Bluegills can be called just gills. The Green sunfish are commonly called a green or greenie.

Yup, redbreasts are robins. Redears = shellcrackers. Warmouths are goggle eyes. I've heard longears called Cherry Bream and 'Bows, as in rainbows. Etc..

I got some pics of a couple around here somewhere. Let me try to find a few.
