Maybe you should start with trying to identify jig head types, styles...There are many that work well in different situations. For instance, there are round heads, minnow heads (my personal favorite), walleye heads, roadrunner heads, so on and so forth. Determine what type of fishing you will be doing and select an appropriate head for that style fishing. Then determine if you will use a painted head or unpainted head.
After figuring out a jig head style you need to determine water clarity and depth you will be fishing, as well as time of day and strength of UV rays. There is a product called the " color selector" (or some such name) that can help you make a determination as to the best color given the water clarity. Failing that...go to the marina or bait store or local lake guru and talk to those folks about favorite colors for their particular lakes.
Then you have to figure out some fishing locations...
Then you have to figure out a presentation...
If you are new to crappie fishing...then by all means hire a crappie guide to show you the ropes on the lake you plan to fish most of the time. they can take several years of trial and error from the process of color selection, presentation techniques, and location. Just be up front and honest with them about your goals going in and don't try to steal coordinates of their fishing locations and you will find most are more than willing to share info with you...Well worth the money...you will have to spend.
After you get a guide, spend some time on the forum, talk to folks via PM or in the open section, and maybe you will get an invite to fish a particular lake..the forum folks are really helpful to newbys and want to promote the sport. We sometimes bicker among ourselves, but it generally just turns into a learning experience for everyone all. I can tell you without hesitation some of the best crappie fishermen in the state, and on each lake you plan to fish are located on this forum.
As an aside, you look at the websites for bait and tackle companies represented on this forum...talk to the owners (they are accessible via Private Message (PM) about the lakes you plan to fish...most of them have valuable insight into colors, jigs, presentations, etc., that you will find helpful.
During your learning process, post the presentations and results of your efforts on the forum...if you have trouble, as why...you will get good advice from people that have "been there, done that" Eventually, you will work your way through your struggles (with help) and will begin to catch fish at every outing...maybe only one or two...but then you will start focusing on catching more and bigger fish...
I hope this information will help you...Good luck and good fishing.

If you are fishing the canals in Irving just get the jig that looks the most like a turd and get a natural drift and you should do well
