What's the best setup for a drop shot rig? I haven't used very often but have had some good luck lately using a friends rig and would like to own my own.

6.6ft spinning rod with a mid level quality reel. Any other add ons to this advise would be personal preference toward gear. I'm thinking if you keep it simple, you are more apt to dedicate the rig to just being drop shot ready. 6.6ft rod will provide a sensitive tip with an immediate backbone.
Drop shot hooks are small so let the fish get hooked without the manly hook set. Let the drag do the rest. Tightlines!

Gonna qualify my comments with I just moved to Texas from Georgia. I haven't had a chance to fish here yet.. still unpacking boxes! Drop shotting is just about the best way to catch bass.. both spots and largemouths in north Georgia. I use a Skeet Reese DS rod and a Shimano Symetre 1500FI reel. I like to use Invivx 8lb test fluorocarbon line. The 1500 sized reel might be a little small for Texas largemouths.. but that rig is pretty sweet. I like to use 1/0 Gamakatsu DS or Octopus Circle hooks.. they work really well. I will be really glad to get done unpacking and getting on the water. Maybe by August! FWIW BD

Welcome to Texas. You're going to love the fishing, but August would be the worst month to experience our quality bites. If you can't get on the water before then, let your first lake be a power plant lake where the heat is not [censored] much of a factor with the fish in it. Don't know where in Texas you are, but Fayette County or Welsh would be good.

I'm having trouble with my Stradic FJ, on a Dobyns 703sf. I've tried a few different lines, and just can't get the cast I want out of it. I'm thinking og going ot a baitcaster, Core MG, Pixy, or that Abu MG, or any of the other light gear rod reel rigs. I haven't decided yet, but I'm much more accustomed to baitcasters.

I went to 20# power pro braid with a 6ft 15# floro leader and have never looked back. I had 20# Suffix, and it just wouldn't cast. I should be able to lob something 50 yards with that open spool. I also hate to have a leader knot go through the eyes when I cast. I worry it wears the knot out. It slows the cast down too. I mostly use an albright knot, which is clean and compact. I just put 15# Invisx, and though that would solve it, but it didn't. I'm gonna give the flouro a little longer to see if I can figure it out.
