I'm considering a trip to El Salto in June with my 13 yr old son. I've never been but have heard positive reviews from several folks that have been. I'm looking for answers to a couple of questions.

1. I understand that it is safe at the lake/resort. The US Travel Advisory talks a lot about roads and unauthorized checkpoints. Is the road from the airport to El Salto safe? Is it a dirt road, 6 lane highway?

2. I'm curious if anyone has taken their kids. And if so, did they enjoy the experience? Is it a good place for a kid to learn a variety of ways to fish?

3. Looking at Anglers Inn. They say they have purified bottled water. What was your experience at Anglers Inn? Had tourista one too many times. :-)

Looking for feedback from guys/gals that HAVE been to El Salto, not second hand. Thanks for the feedback!

When I went, we didn't use Anglers Inn. But, we did see their facility and it looks first class. Your trip from the airport will take about 1 to 1 1/2 hrs, if memory serves me correct. The roads were mostly two lane black top. ( what's with the speed bumps in the middle of no where?). We had absolutely no trouble or never even felt nervous about our surroundings. But, you can never be to careful and aware of where your at. If you go, it stands to be the trip of a lifetime. Our #'s per day weren't crazy, but my three best came during the last two days. A 10.9, 11.15, & 12.3. I think it would be neat for your son to see a totally different way of life, as far as how the Mexican people live, as well as some terrific fishing. Mazatlan is really Americanized though, if you could spend some time in the city, perhaps on your way out, you'd enjoy the sights and sounds! I say go, odds are, you won't regret it!

Had the pleasure of going a couple of months ago. Absolutely first class. Road from airport is a new highway to the turn off, and then only a short ride on a good road to the resort.
Great food and drinks, and the hospitality is impeccable.
A great place to take your son, but it may spoil him.
It will be hot in June, but no nets, and very little pressure. The staff will do whatever it takes to make you happy.

I went last year with a group of guys to Anglers Inn and it was fantastic. I travel all over in the mining business and had no security concerns. I'm taking my 11-year old son July 12-16. Sure be fun if we had other TFF father/sons in camp at the same time.

You will have a very safe trip. I have never been concerned at all during my drive in trips with customers. I have been making the drive several times per year for 25 years. My corporate drive in trips are $2,995 per person for 5 1/2 days of fishing.
For TFF members it is cheap; all you pay is the expenses of the trip, which is about $,1500 per person. You will get a refund if any of that money is not spent on the trip.
I have to use a more drive in friendly resort; so I take my customers to Lake Oviachic. You and your son will catch 100 per day with 50 of those over 5 lbs. Also fishing out of a 20 foot Skeeter is a PLUS.

The big fish do not like the nets so it is a hit or miss. If the nets are out and you are there your opportunity for a DD is way up there each day. You should have several 8's and 9's each day.
The nets in Lake Oviachic never come out. The Bass live with them and the fishing is always the same.

If anyone thinks that traveling to interior Mexico is safe, then you are sadly mistaken. I would not even think about taking one of my children with me if I was crazy enough to go. Are the cartels specifically targeting Americans? No. But many have been held at gunpoint and robbed. You don't know any of those people over there, and believe me, a lot more of them work or are controlled by one of the cartels then what you might think. You don't want to be in the presence of someone if one of the other cartels decides to attack them. There are lots of places to fish in Texas that you will have just as much fun and be a lot safer imo.

I wish we could use this excuse to keep people off our local lakes! laugh

"the Fork meth cartels are battling again, need to stay off the lake a few weeks"

"Grapevine pirates have been holding bass fisherman for ransom again, they are luring fisherman within striking range with bikini clad decoys"

No offense but their are great lakes in Texas to take your kid fishing on, you need to have your head checked for considering taking for kid into Mexico with what goes on down there in recent years, sorry if it offends someone that guides, or has a lodge down there but clean up your country if your Mexican, if your American then that's a risk you take when you choose to do business in what is basically a 3rd world country.

I have been going for 25 years and have never felt unsafe. Most of my trips have been drive in trips so I have really been at risk if anyone ever was. Nothing has happened to keep me from making another trip next month.
You have to choose not to advernture out in some of our countries bad areas here in the US.. I have learned that you take care of business and stay on the beaten path and everything will be OK. Adventure off that path to places you have no business and you will fine yourself in deep stuff up to your neck.

You have been very fortunate. I can tell stories of friends who live in Mexico now that would not agree with you about the safety on the roads.

I wonder how much they sell kids down there for?

Mexico is the devil's play ground, good luck!
