Here’s an opportunity to learn to fly fish. Some of the Orvis locations will be offering free learn to fly fish classes during April, May, and June.
Two classes are being offered, FF 101 and FF 201. FF 101 will include both hands on casting instruction and classroom instruction on equipment and fishing. FF 201 will continue where FF 101 ends and will include the opportunity to fish. Federation of Fly Fishers certified casting instructors will be helping with many of these classes and I’m even planning to help with some of the Dallas classes.
These are introductory level classes and they are a great opportunity to learn how to get started fly fishing. All equipment will be provided and there is no charge for either class.
If you are interested, contact your local Orvis shop for more details and to sign up. The Dallas shop’s number is (214) 265-1600.
One other interesting opportunity, the Dallas Orvis shop will be offering a special all day FF 301 class that will held on the water at Broken Bow that will focus on how to fish trout streams. There will be a fee for this one and space is limited, but this class looks very interesting. Contact Dallas Orvis for more information on this class.
Here are the dates for the FF 101 and FF 201 classes: Fly Fishing 101 Dates: April 20th & 21st April 27th & 28th May 4th & 5th May 18th & 19th May 25th & 26th June 8th & 9th Fly Fishing 201 Dates: May 11th & 12th June 1st & 2nd June 15th & 16th

Thanks for the public service message, Rex. This is a great way for folks to enter the sometimes daunting sport of fly fishing. Kudos to Orvis and the other local shops who offer similar courses.

I don't know the location for FF 201, but Dallas's goal was to find a spot full of hungry green sunfish and their assorted cousins, that has room to cast, and isn't too far from the shop. I'm just glad I'm not responsible for finding that place.

Mick, I agree, this type of class is a great way to get started Fly Fishing. They provide an opportunity to quickly learn enough to get started fishing. You can sure get a lot of questions answered in this type class.

Thanks. The guy running the Orvis store down here in Rockport gives free lessons every Saturday morning from what I have heard. Can't stand going in the place because I want one of everything though. Lol

I was talking to the guy that runs the blog DieFische and he's hosting a clinic at the Austin Orvis shop on April 27 on how to most effectively fish local waters. Cool to see Orvis is really getting involved locally. I still can't hardly afford anything in those stores, but I'll support them as long as they're doing awesome things like this.
