Hello fellow-anglers and fishermen,

Will be going out to Lake Welch/ Welsh (which one is correct?) this weekend on an inflatable with trolling motor.

Have heard a lot about the power plant and how it keeps the water warm and feeeesh everywhere.. yada yada... however, I drove by the power plant, and did not see any access point through it. Fenced and all.

Any advice for me? I will surely report back on how I did, and any tips on areas to fish, baits to use etc will be awesome!

Thanks!

Take 49 south out of Mt Pleasant to 1735. Left on CR 4855. 4855 is the actual boat ramp, dead ends right into the lake. Only public access(free). Facing the lake left will take you into the upper stump filled end. Right will take you towards the more open lower end towards the dam. I would go left with only a trolling motor and start fishing the points and coves upper with grass. Google it and you can see the entire layout. Small lake and good choice for smaller rig. Only consideration is if your inflatable is appropriate for stumpy wood filled waters. If not you can work the open shoreline down towards the dam. Post your results because most people think the "hot water lake bass" disappear after winter. Good luck!

Reporting back - it was a good day at Lake Welsh. We took the road exactly as directed by 361V. While driving on 49S, FM 1735 is not that well-marked, there is only 1 sign ahead of the road. And then when you turn, there is another sign confirming that you took the correct turn. After that, the CO RD-s are very clearly marked, so spotting 4855 was no problem.

We went towards the south side of the lake (as 361V had pointed out that the north side was stump-filled and we had an inflatable). We trolled at the lowest speed 20 feet away from the shore line (depth registering at 10 - 12 feet) and cast out a variety of lures - spinners, worms, etc. We cast out both towards the shore line side and away from the shore side. Finally what worked was my green and yellow spotted chatter frog. After a few small bass which we let go, finally got the keeper around 6:15 PM at the mouth of a cove - it was a 21 inches LMB. Unfortunately I forgot to re-tie the frog in the excitement, and when I threw it back, another monster bite undid the knot, and I lost my favorite chatter frog. I had to change color (to moss green) after that, but did not get any bites with that.

Beautiful warm water, lovely lake. Will definitely go back.

Thanks for all your help!

I saw you putting in when I was finishing up. You were doing something with your trolling motor by the bank next to the ramp when I came by you and loaded my Ranger fish & ski back on the trailer. Glad you had fun! I really like Welsh too, caught 11 Sat, with 3.35 lbs being the biggest. I caught the last one in the back of the cove by the ramp while y'all were airing up your raft. Was a beautiful day on a beautiful lake!
