I just bought a used boat and the trolling motor is a 24 volt 71 lb thrust motor guide what I'm trying to figure out is why they have a positive and negative cables on both batteries. There are 4 wires 2 positive 2 negative that go towards my trolling motor. Every 24 volt setup I've seen has had only a positive and then negative and the a middle wire from batt 1 positive to batt 2 negative..IS this a normal setup? will I get the full 71lb thrust with the setup that I have?

I'm thinking the switch for 12 or 24 is on the trolling motor pedal, if so then this set up is correct..

Are the wires the same diameter? Are the wires paralleled the same?
You might be looking at a "home rigged electrical" system...
I would rewire it correctly.
