If it's your first baitcaster I would go mono. But that's just me. for someone new to the reel, or new to baitcasters...mono all the way.
My preference is 15lb fluorocarbon. These guys are smart! Listen to them! Problem with asking a question on the forums is you get a lot of good answers but not for the right situation. You are new so get used to it. You WILL back lash and maybe even so bad you'll have to cut some or all off. Don't buy braid just yet until you are comfortable using the reel. Then come back and ask the question "What line do you use and when?".

I'd go with something between 12 and 17lb mono.
Then, in some big open place drag out about as much as you think you could cast, then alittle more and wrap the spool in electric tape. That away if you do get a backlash, its not going to blow up the whole reel, just alittle bit. And a tip for untangling one, keep your thumb on the spool alittle bit, but pull the line where it comes out the front of the reel. While you're doing this if the line won't come off any more because it looks like the line has gone through a loop, pull the top of that loop till it stops then go back to pulling the line where it comes out the front of the reel till there aren't any tangles. Don't reel back over it while its all messed up.

On my Crankbait rod and Worm rod I use Bass Pro Shops XPS Signature Series Fluorocarbon Fishing Line, sinks and is not visable.
Top Water / Jerkbait rod Berkley Trilene Sensation Line - mono 12lb green
I've never used it but Berkley Trilene XL Smooth Casting Line has lot's of good reviews on BPS online.

LoL All these good opinions are just the tip of the iceberg! I started with 17 lb mono and used it for about a year then srarted experimenting with other lines.

Man you can catch almost every freshwater fish on a 6' rod with a baitcast reel spoiled with 15lb mono. I've fished all of my life and have experimented with most of the lines out there and still spool all of my reels with mono. Sure braid is good but from my experiences its real technique specific. As for floro, if I'm going someplace with crystal clear water, I'll spool a reel or two with it. But for most of the water around here, some shade of green has worked fine for me for years. No need starting out, to go gungho, unless you don't care to throw down some cash. Just my two cents.

I've tried a lot of lines over the years, used them in fresh and saltwater...some were better than others but the top brands there wasn't that much of difference and then braid and flurocarbon came along, tried them, still not much difference between top brands but different. Now read about folks complaining about breaks on hookset, try this knot, wet this knot, don't do this or that... went back to what I know best as I never had any complaints to begin with. Ignorance is bliss.

Most of my reels are spooled with P-Line CX Premium, it's a copolymer line with characteristics that fall in between mono and fluorocarbon; been using it since 2005ish. I have 12lbs strung on my Abu Revo reels. I second the pline cx. I use it on all my reels, feel It's the best of both worlds (mono and fluoro). I use 12lb on most all my baitcasters, I up it to 15lb when I go to fork or know I'm gonna be fishing in vegetation. I used the cxx before and I think it has too much memory for my liking.
Swimbaits Only.

12-15lb P-Line CX Premium is what I have used for many moons. Recently I have switched over to Seaguar Red label. SEAGUAR RED LABEL This stuff cast great and last a lot longer then the P-line did.
