Matter of fact that exact thing happened to me yesterday

I imagine it makes a pretty big boom even in the closed bilge compartment. I've heard of it happening but never experienced it, praise God. Hope I never do. Lots of baking soda and hope you get all the acid neutralized. I'd let insurance know just in case there is damage that shows up later.

The problem was its an Interstate battery. Had the exact thing happen with mine. The only thing I could contribute it to was overcharging (bad onboard charger) and it boiled most of the water out and when I hit the ignition switch it must of arched at the battery terminal.

Yes with an interstate battery last year. My face was over it luckily I had matrix like movement but it took 2 days to hear out of my left ear again.

Sounds like I need to add Baking Soda to the 'emergency supply kit' on the boat..

Years ago a lady came into my service station in Barstow California in a yellow ryder truck. Her battery was dead and she wanted a jump start to make it to the Ryder dealer. It had 6 little caps on top like they did back then. As I clamped on the positive terminal, I saw a big flash. Next thing I knew, I am spitting out what I thought were my teeth. They were battery caps. That thing blew up right in my face. Surprised the [censored] out of me. Rinsed off my upper half, and no harm done.

If you're a weekender like me...how often should you check your batteries to make sure they still have water in them?
