The thread about what is most important in rough water made me realize that I am probably one of those guys that really doesn't know how to drive well in rough water. The largest lakes I fish regularly are Pines and Sandlin and even at that, the areas of those lakes that I fish don't get very rough.

What do you feel are the fundamentals to driving a boat in rough water?

My #1 advice is to find someone who is good at driving a boat, get out when it's rough and let them give you a little on water instruction. Then spend some days out learning what your boat is capable of and get the feel of her in the rough stuff...

Here is a pretty good article

The conditions and the size of your boat dictates how you drive ie. big swells, waves close together, looks like a washing machine. You drive different in each condition.

Just do it. Only you can learn how your boat handles in the rough stuff. Start small and work your way up to the biggens. Be ready to get wet and make sure your pump(s) work before you go. When you think you are good go to Erie in the spring and get ready to learn again.

I learned by going out on some of the roughest days I could. Do a lot of reading first, maybe check out some videos on YouTube

Don't go out in it if you don't have to.

Keep nose up as not to spear a wave. That really sucks!!

It's really hard to say how to do it it really depends on your boat and weather.

trim and speed, get the two coordinated for the conditions. I have ridden with guys who are extremely good at using the right amount of trim for the conditions. Some of your trim adjustments will be just a split-second touch up or down makes a big difference in how the your boat behaves for the conditions.

The next thing is matching your speed to the trim attitude of the boat in the conditions.

Conditions include running downwind, into the wind, and angling across waves.

Once you learn to match these three things you'll be able to handle your boat when it's rough. So speed, trim, and conditions.

Great advice. Whatever it takes to help out fellow Boaters!

Buy a ranger lol

It's all about seat time depending on the boat the slightest adjustment in trim can change your ride dramatically.

I am sure it depends on the boat u r driving. But I like the nose down. Let the nose of your boat cut the wave, the water will pick your nose up
